BYD’s all-new, yet-to-be-named pickup truck will compete against the likes of the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Mitsubishi Triton. Based on the leaked powertrain and interior details, it is likely that the vehicle will be based on the Bao Leopard 5, a 4×4 body-on-frame SUV that was recently showcased at the 2024 Bangkok Motor Show.

Despite being heavily camouflaged in bright blue and orange wraps, one can still make out some typical pickup design cues such as the upright headlights, large grille, rugged front skid plate, flared wheel arches, and vertical taillights.

Alongside the teaser images, a set of prototype and patent images published by Autohome provide a clearer look at the upcoming pickup. Notable features include a full-width LED light bar at both the front and rear, similar to the electric F-150 Lightning, a large BYD logo on the nose, and blacked-out A- and C-pillars.

Inside, the pickup shares many similarities with the Bao Leopard 5, including the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and vertical air-conditioning vents on either side of the dashboard. The cabin has a rugged, off-road-ready design, with chunky-looking controls on the center console for various functions such as the four-wheel drive system and climate control.

No powertrain details have been released yet, but it is likely to share the plug-in hybrid powertrain with the Bao Leopard 5. This consists of a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 194 PS and 273 Nm, mated to two electric motors for a combined system output of 687 PS and 760 Nm.

The BYD pickup has been confirmed for Australia and South Africa, and could possibly be offered in Southeast Asian countries as well.
