Land Rover is testing the wildest Defender yet around the world’s toughest proving ground – and these first pictures of the hardcore version show dramatic visual upgrades. It’s called the OCTA and the British firm says it’ll be the ultimate go-anywhere Defender.
Despite the camouflage, you can see that the side features aerodynamically optimized racing alloys, while at the back there’s a unique quad-exit exhaust system and more pronounced wheel arch extensions. Land Rover has also tweaked the grille, likely to aid cooling.
Under the hood, the Defender is likely to use a version of BMW’s twin-turbo V8, with mild-hybrid assistance, developing around 600bhp – making it the most powerful Defender ever.Â
The British firm is also fitting the OCTA with its 6D chassis system, which features semi-active electro-hydraulic dampers that improve both the ride and handling – meaning the OCTA should be as capable on the road as it is off it.
We’ve yet to see inside the hardcore Defender, but a teaser image has revealed it will feature an illuminated diamond motif on the steering wheel, signifying its special status. The newcomer will be revealed later this year.
