There’s no further word on finer details at this stage, but the next-gen Toyota Hilux is likely to gain a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant.
The Toyota Hilux is a top-seller in Australia
The inclusion of a Hilux PHEV would make sense given Australia’s impending stricter emissions standards. It’s understood the Japanese car maker is looking at a plug-in hybrid Hilux with an EV-only range of 200km.
While Toyota Australia has already introduced a 48-volt mild-hybrid version of the current-generation Hilux, Toyota Thailand has also confirmed a fully electric Hilux will be produced in Thailand in late 2025.
“The full EV Hilux may be ready by the end of next year,” Toyota Motor Thailand president Noriaki Yamashita told Reuters last month.
The electric Hilux is almost certain to be part of the next-generation model. Toyota has produced a small number of Hilux BEV prototypes based on the current-generation model, but these have not been for sale. Instead, they’ve been used for real-world durability testing, serving as shuttle and logistics vehicles for the CP Group, which owns 7-11 and Makro in Thailand.
The current-generation Hilux was first launched in Thailand in May 2015, so a 2025 update would make sense, giving the model a 10-year lifespan.
