Despite having held a Class B2 driver’s license for many years, Phu Hai (40 years old, Ho Chi Minh City) still does not feel confident driving a car on the road, partly because he rarely has the opportunity to drive.
“I only took the driver’s license test before because all my friends had one. Now that I can afford to buy a car, I still can’t because I’m too scared to drive,” said Phu Hai.
Spending millions on a driving improvement service
After being introduced by an acquaintance, Phu Hai decided to use a driving improvement service offered by a driving school in Go Vap District (Ho Chi Minh City).
There, Phu Hai was introduced to an hourly improvement package where one instructor would teach one student. The driving improvement program costs between VND 300,000/hour and VND 500,000/hour depending on the type of car and the time slot chosen by the student.
Besides that, this center also designs driving improvement programs on long journeys, for example from Ho Chi Minh City to neighboring cities such as Vung Tau City (Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province), Long Khanh City (Dong Nai Province), or from Ho Chi Minh City to Bao Loc City and Da Lat City (Lam Dong Province).

The cost of these one-on-one driving improvement trips ranges from VND 3 million to VND 5 million, depending on the type of car the student chooses to use. For groups of 2-4 people, the cost will be lower, but students must accept that their practice time will not be equivalent to a one-on-one program.
Due to time constraints, Phu Hai only registered for the hourly driving improvement program and mostly drove within the city. He chose the time slot from 4pm to 6pm every Friday and Saturday because, according to him, this is the time when cars frequently travel with high density in urban areas, so practicing driving during rush hour would be more effective.
“After more than a month of practicing with an instructor, I am now quite confident driving and moving through busy roads. Maybe it’s time to buy a car,” Phu Hai said happily.
Willing to travel far to practice driving
Meanwhile, Hong Anh (28 years old, Ho Chi Minh City) said that she and a friend are preparing for a driving improvement program on the Ho Chi Minh City – Can Tho City route at the end of the week.
“After consulting the Internet and acquaintances, I decided to contact a driving instructor and was introduced to the program mentioned above. Even though I’m quite busy with work, my friend and I still try to arrange a time to participate because we want to experience driving on the 2 highways to the Western region,” said Hong Anh.
Hoang Tuan, a driving instructor in Ho Chi Minh City, said that on the highway, many cars travel at high speeds at the same time, which can easily cause drivers to feel overconfident.
“Drivers on the highway may feel overconfident because the cars are moving at almost the same speed, with little difference in speed compared to when driving on city streets. However, driving on the highway still requires high concentration, even more so than when driving in the city,” said Hoang Tuan.

Therefore, Hoang Tuan said that he often designs driving improvement programs for students to drive on highways, in addition to driving in urban areas during rush hour as well as creating conditions for students to drive at night.
“In driving, regular practice is very important because it helps drivers develop their observation and situation-handling skills on the road. ‘Practice makes perfect’ is also a very appropriate saying when it comes to driving,” Hoang Tuan concluded.
According to current regulations, Class B1 automatic transmission driver’s license students must complete 24 hours of actual driving with a distance of 710 km in a training car equipped with a DAT device to be eligible to take the final exam. Meanwhile, for Class B2 and B1 manual transmission licenses, these numbers will be 40 hours and 810 km of actual road.
Even though the actual practice time has increased during the training process, many people still do not feel confident driving after obtaining a driver’s license and have to seek out driving improvement services. Overall, this is a very beneficial trend because it helps new drivers as well as experienced drivers who have not driven for a long time to gain more experience, thereby reducing the possibility of traffic collisions when driving.
