Xiaomi’s smartphone expertise has done what Apple couldn’t and built an electric car that will soon be on the market. It’s been five months since the car’s debut and now company CEO Lei Jun has given the first indication of how much it’ll cost in China.
Jun said in a recent post that he wants the SU7 to be the “most beautiful, easy to drive and intelligent car” for less than 500,000 yuan (US$72,500). That’s a price that would make the mid-size EV look competitive on the global market, though Xiaomi is likely to have a major price advantage in its home country of China.
The SU7’s roughly 500,000 yuan price tag would put it in competition with the Nio ET7 sedan that also starts around half a million yuan. It would be significantly cheaper than imported Porsche Taycans that start at over 900,000 yuan and top out over 1.4 million . Xiaomi is expected to announce pricing this coming Thursday when it begins taking orders for the sedan.
Xiaomi has recently begun displaying the SU7 in 76 of its stores in 29 cities across China. The tech giant has built a reputation for offering good value in electronics both in China and abroad, so pricing for its first car will be key.
The standard version of the SU7 will use a single electric motor in the rear with 295 horsepower and 400 Nm of torque, helping the car reach 100 km/h in 5.28 seconds. Two higher-performance variants will have a dual-motor setup with 664 horsepower, an 800-volt architecture and a 101-kWh battery pack.
