Mazda’s China joint venture with Changan has released new teaser images of its upcoming electric sedan on social media, offering a preview of the model’s overall shape and exterior details such as its taillights, ahead of its official debut at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. The new model is likely to serve as the successor to the Mazda6.

The Japanese carmaker has also confirmed that the car will be offered in both fully electric and plug-in hybrid variants, and will be based on a platform developed by Changan.

The teaser images provide us with a glimpse of the sedan’s sleek, aerodynamic shape and distinctive design cues, which are reminiscent of those seen on other Changan-owned brands.

We can also see that the taillights span the full width of the rear end, sitting below a prominent rear spoiler. Mazda is also likely to incorporate its signature grille design, flanked by a pair of sharp-looking headlights.

Changan Mazda has previously announced plans to launch two new models in 2024, codenamed J90A (electric) and J90A-REEV (plug-in hybrid). These will be followed by the J90K and J90K-REEV models in 2025. Mazda has trademarked the EZ-6 and EZ-60 names in China, with the EZ-6 likely to be the name of the electric sedan and the EZ-60 being the name of an electric SUV.

In Europe, the Japanese carmaker recently trademarked the Mazda 6e name, hinting at a new generation of the mid-size sedan. It’s not yet clear whether this model will be related to the upcoming Changan-developed sedan or if it will be a separate product designed specifically for Western markets.

The new Mazda model is set to be unveiled at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show, which opens on April 25.
