Beyond the swarming invasion of Chinese electric cars that has mainstream European automakers worried, the continent’s hypercar crowd has another threat to consider. And that threat just took a clear step closer to home with the Aion Hyper SSR’s European debut in Italy.
The Hyper SSR, which looks like an electrified two-door Acura NSX, made its first European appearance at parent company GAC’s Advanced Design Milan facility in Italy. There’s no word yet on whether the Aion Hyper SSR will be sold in Europe, but it wouldn’t be a surprise: electric hypercars like the SSR are expected to look for buyers beyond China.
The Aion Hyper SSR was introduced in China last year. It measures 4,538 mm long and 1,238 mm tall, making it slightly shorter but taller than the Rimac Nevera, though the Croatian hypercar has far more power. Specifically, the Rimac Nevera boasts 1,877 horsepower, while the SSR’s three-motor electric powertrain is rated at 1,208 hp.
GAC says the Hyper SSR can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 1.9 seconds, which would make it nearly as quick as the Nevera (1.8 seconds). However, the SSR has a top speed of 250 km/h, while the Rimac has a top speed of up to 412 km/h.
Here’s the important caveat, though: the Rimac Nevera costs around $2 million, while the Hyper SSR reportedly costs about a tenth of that ($233,000 for the Ultimate Track version and just $178,000 for the base model).
In keeping with the zero-emissions ethos of the car, GAC says the Hyper SSR’s interior is made with sustainable materials and no animal products. The lightweight seats are said to provide plenty of support without sacrificing everyday comfort.
There’s also plenty of digital tech inside, as you’d expect. Ahead of the driver is an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster, which is joined by a 14.6-inch floating infotainment screen on the dash.
