Mazda Unveils New EZ-6 Electric Vehicle at Beijing Auto Show 2024
The Changan Mazda joint venture officially unveiled its all-new EZ-6 electric vehicle at the Beijing Auto Show 2024. As expected, the Mazda EZ-6 is considered the successor to the discontinued Mazda6 midsize sedan.

The EZ-6 is not based on Mazda’s own platform. Instead, it uses partner Changan’s EPA hybrid architecture, which can accommodate both pure electric and internal combustion engine vehicles.
Despite being built on a Changan platform, the EZ-6 still carries Mazda’s distinct design language. This is evident in the front end, which features a large closed grille flanked by LED accent lighting. The sharp headlights with Mazda’s signature “L”-shaped LED daytime running lights are also present. Additionally, the Mazda EZ-6 has a wide trapezoidal center air intake and two narrow vertical air vents on the front bumper.

The side profile of the electric car is sleek and coupe-like, with four doors and hidden door handles. The alloy wheels have an aerodynamic design with five double spokes and a two-tone finish.
Like many electric vehicles, the Mazda EZ-6 features flush door handles to reduce drag
The rear of the Mazda EZ-6 sports crescent-shaped taillights connected by a horizontal light strip across the trunk lid. Above the taillights is a small spoiler integrated into the trunk lid, giving the car a sporty touch. Instead of the Japanese automaker’s logo, the word “Mazda” is embossed beneath the taillights.

Mazda has not released much information regarding the electric vehicle’s specifications. The Mazda EZ-6 is reported to have dimensions of 4,921 x 1,890 x 1,485 mm and a wheelbase of 2,900 mm. Compared to the Mazda6, it is 56 mm longer, 50 mm wider, 35 mm taller, and has a 70 mm longer wheelbase.
Inside, the Mazda EZ-6 offers a spacious five-seat cabin thanks to the long wheelbase and is designed with a minimalist aesthetic. Most functions are controlled through a 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system that protrudes from the dashboard. The center console has minimal physical buttons, featuring only two cup holders and a small storage compartment. Behind the flat-bottom steering wheel is a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster.

According to Mazda, the EZ-6 will come in two versions, with internal codenames J90A and J90A-REEV. The J90A is a pure electric version, powered solely by batteries. The J90A-REEV will have an additional internal combustion engine to extend its range, similar to the Mazda MX-30.

Chinese media reports suggest that the Mazda EZ-6 is based on partner Changan’s Deepal SL03. Therefore, it is not surprising that the new Mazda shares its powertrain options with the Deepal SL03.
In the Chinese market, the Deepal SL03 currently offers two powertrain options. The first is a rear-mounted electric motor that produces 215 horsepower or 255 horsepower, depending on the variant, and 320 Nm of torque. This electric motor is paired with either a 58.9 kWh or 66.8 kWh battery, providing a range of 530 km and 610 km respectively under the CLTC test cycle.
The second is an electric motor with 215 horsepower or 235 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque. This electric motor is paired with a 1.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine to extend the driving range. The battery has a capacity of 19 kWh or 28.4 kWh, providing a range of 134 km and 200 km respectively without using the gasoline engine. When combining both the gasoline engine and battery, the vehicle can travel up to 1,140 km with the 19 kWh battery and 1,200 km with the 28.4 kWh battery.
The Mazda EZ-6 is expected to be launched next year. However, as of now, Mazda plans to sell the vehicle only in the Chinese market.
