According to official Mazda documentation, the Arata concept appears to be coming very early in the development process, and employs the automaker’s latest interpretation of its Kodo design language.
As part of Mazda’s electrification push, the Japanese automaker has plans to offer production versions of the Arata in China next year. The production Arata is expected to be offered with a choice of powertrains: fully electric and plug-in hybrid.
For reference, the all-electric Mazda EZ-6 packs an electric motor mounted at the rear that’s good for 218 PS or 258 PS (depending on variant) – peak torque in both cases is 320 Nm. Battery capacity in the Mazda EZ-6 ranges from 58.9-66.8 kWh, providing an operating range of 530 km to 610 km, on the CLTC testing standard.
The plug-in hybrid powertrain from the EZ-6 is also likely to feature in the production Arata. Specifically, the EZ-6’s plug-in hybrid system combines a 1.5 liter inline-four engine with either a 19 kWh or 28.4 kWh battery pack, and an electric motor rated at either 218 PS or 238 PS, 320 Nm of torque.
In the EZ-6, the plug-in hybrid variant has an all-electric operating range of 135 km to 200 km. Production versions of the Arata concept are expected to offer a similar range, according to the Japan Times.
