At CES 2024, Mercedes-Benz engineering boss Markus Schaefer confirmed to Autocar that a baby G-Class will be offered with an electric powertrain. The pint-sized off-roader will also eschew the Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA) platform.
Back in September 2023, Mercedes-Benz officials said the baby G-Class would take the form of a three-door model. Mercedes-Benz chairman Ola Kallenius said the baby G-Class would be a fun vehicle to drive, both on- and off-road.
Details about the baby G-Class remain scarce, but the electric EQG variant was brought to CES 2024 for a public preview, albeit in heavily camouflaged form. There, the German automaker wowed onlookers with a demonstration of the EQG’s “G-Turn” tank turn.
The Mercedes-Benz EQG features four electric motors, one at each wheel, which allows the EQG to tackle rugged terrain with ease, including performing the aforementioned G-Turn maneuver. The Mercedes-Benz EQG is expected to be revealed later this year, while the baby G-Class could debut as early as 2026.
In Vietnam, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is currently sold in the G 63 guise, which is priced from 11.75 billion VND (around $495,000). The G 63 rivals the BMW XM, which is priced from VND 10.999 billion ($464,000).
