Apple’s longtime hardware executive, DJ Novotney, is leaving the company to take on a new role at electric vehicle maker Rivian, Bloomberg reported. Novotney is currently the Vice President of Engineering, Hardware Technologies and Special Projects at Apple.
He has worked at Apple for 25 years, playing a key role in the development of the company’s groundbreaking products including the iPod, iPhone, Apple Watch, and more. Novotney is the second high-profile executive to leave Apple for Rivian in recent weeks.
Earlier this month, Apple’s Director of Product Management for Mobility and Automotive, Jonas Reinke, left to join Rivian as its Vice President of Product Management.
Novotney’s departure is the latest in a string of exits by longtime Apple employees. Apple’s VP of iPhone and Apple Watch design, Evans Hankey, is leaving the company next month to join Jony Ive’s design firm LoveFrom, and hardware engineering chief Steve Hotelling left late last year.
Apple has lost several other executives across its hardware, operations, and services businesses throughout 2022 and 2023.
Bloomberg’s sources said that Novotney will become Rivian’s Senior Vice President of Vehicle Programs, reporting directly to CEO RJ Scaringe.
“Amazing products are at the heart of what we do. I’ve been fortunate to be a part of so many incredible teams over the years, developing everything from iPod, iPhone, iPad, Watch, and more. Apple has been my life but it’s time for me to take the next step and help bring a new kind of product to life,” Novotney said in a statement on his departure from Apple.
In addition to his work on landmark consumer products like the iPod, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, Novotney also spent time working on Apple’s electric car project, Project Titan.
More recently, Novotney was a senior director in charge of developing future home devices, including devices in the robotics and artificial intelligence space.
Rivian is an Irvine, California-based startup that’s seen as one of the few companies that could truly rival Tesla in the electric vehicle space. The company produces two consumer vehicles, a battery-powered pickup truck and an SUV called the R1T and R1S.
The company also produces battery-powered delivery vans for Amazon and is in talks to provide similar vehicles to other companies.
