After the Lunar New Year holiday affected the entire Vietnamese car market, the sales result of the whole D-segment SUV group also decreased sharply, including Ford Everest and Hyundai Santa Fe.

According to statistics from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA), the market sales volume of vehicles in February reached 11,633 units, including 8,099 passenger cars, 4,478 commercial vehicles, and 56 specialized vehicles. Of which, the large SUV segment sold a total of 696 units, accounting for 5.9% of the total volume of vehicles sold in the market.

Compared to the sales results of the first month of this year, the sales volume of this segment decreased by 46.6%. Compared to the number of large SUVs sold in the same period in 2023, this figure is also lower by about 62.5%.

Ford Everest sales decrease by nearly half, Hyundai Santa Fe sells less than 200 units

In the previous month, Ford’s large SUV recorded a decline in sales but still ranked among the top 10 best-selling vehicles in the market with 785 units. Prior to that, throughout many months of 2023, Everest has always been a prominent name in the best-selling group when average sales were always over 700 units/month.

However, entering the second month of the year, the segment’s warrior unexpectedly saw a sharp decline in sales when it only sold 351 units, equivalent to a decrease of 55.2%. Compared to the sales results of the same period last year, this figure is also lower by about 46%.

This is also the month with the lowest sales of this large SUV model since 2023. However, due to the overall market downturn, Ford Everest still held its position in the group of top 10 best-selling vehicles of the month.

Hyundai Santa Fe is also affected by the market downturn with February sales reaching 132 units. Compared to the previous month, the number of Santa Fe vehicles increased but was still not enough to help this SUV regain its position like in the last months of 2023.

This situation partly stems from the Tet holiday, which took about 2 weeks of the month. Every year at this time, the sales volume of the entire market often reaches its lowest point as buying and selling activities are temporarily suspended in preparation for the biggest holiday of the year.

According to a survey by Tri Thức – Znews, the number of Santa Fe and Everest vehicles with VIN 2023 has gradually run out of stock since the beginning of January after a long period of being offered with promotions. This could be a factor affecting the sales results of both SUV models in the past month.

When contacting a Ford dealer in Ho Chi Minh City, the consultant at the store said that the Ford Everest VIN 2023 has almost run out of stock, with only 2-3 units left, but they have all been reserved by customers.

In some other stores, there are still a few rare Everest models, but there are almost no more versions if buyers have a demand. In which, the Titanium 4×4 version VIN 2023 is almost out of stock and buyers have to wait for the production batch this year.

Hyundai Santa Fe is also facing a stock shortage since the beginning of the year when at dealerships, almost all versions are “out of stock”. Talking to Tri Thức – Znews, a staff at a Hyundai dealership said that the store has sold almost all Santa Fe VIN 2023 since mid-January this year.

Up to now, the number of VIN 2024 vehicles has also been delivered to the warehouse, but the quantity is quite small, not enough for all colors and versions. If customers have a purchase demand, they need to contact in advance, and the vehicle will be delivered within 1-2 weeks.

“Since January, the dealership has run out of Santa Fe high-end gasoline version. By the beginning of February, almost all vehicles from 2023 have been purchased by customers. However, after Tet, the new Santa Fe has also arrived at the warehouse, but the color options are still limited. If customers have a purchase demand, the dealership will still accept deposits and schedule delivery in about 2 weeks,” added the staff at the dealership.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport faces difficulties, Isuzu mu-X nears the bottom

The decline in sales is reflected in all remaining models in the segment. In which, Toyota Fortuner is the rare SUV that recorded a positive growth rate in February, reaching 86 units. However, compared to the sales results of the same D segment SUV in the same period last year, Fortuner has decreased by more than 77% in sales.

Earlier this year, Toyota Fortuner was adjusted in price by the manufacturer to compete with rivals in the new year. Specifically, Toyota’s large SUV now has a price ranging from 1.055 to 1.35 billion VND, equivalent to a decrease of about 63-120 million VND depending on the version.

Another competitor in the segment is Mazda CX-8, which sold 108 units in February, down about 37.2% compared to the first month of the year. Meanwhile, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport sold 13 units, lower than 90% of the volume sold in the previous month. This D segment SUV currently has 2 versions in Vietnam with a listed price ranging from 1.13 billion to 1.365 billion VND.

At the bottom of the sales ranking, Isuzu Mu-X recorded a decline from 19 units in January to 6 units in February. However, this is a predictable situation because the sales volume of this SUV is always among the slowest in the market. With the gloomy situation of the entire segment, it is hard to avoid the number of successful Mu-X vehicles consumed reaching the current single-digit mark.
