On April 28, 2024, images of a wrecked Chery Omoda 5 went viral on social media. The incident reportedly occurred in Malaysia, and the owner of the Chery Omoda 5 was a female driver.
According to the owner, her subcompact SUV suddenly snapped its rear axle while she was driving. The owner insists that the Chery Omoda 5 did not run over a speed bump, pothole, or collide with another vehicle when the failure occurred. The driver also questions why there were only two welds on the rear axle, suggesting that this may have caused rust and eventual failure.

Fortunately, the vehicle was traveling at a low speed approaching a bend when the failure occurred. As a result, there were no casualties in this incident.
Following the incident, Chery Malaysia has issued an official statement. Chery Malaysia said it has contacted the customer and taken the Omoda 5 to a service center for inspection and investigation. The automaker has also initiated a recall for a small number of Chery Omoda 5 units in Malaysia.
This is not the first time a Chery Omoda 5 customer in Malaysia has reported a fault. Earlier in April 2024, another female owner took to social media to complain about brake issues with her Chery Omoda 5. According to the driver, her vehicle experienced sudden brake failure on a highway after she picked it up from a company service center. The owner also said that she had only owned the subcompact SUV for two months but had already visited the service center several times.
The Chery Omoda 5 is a subcompact SUV that is scheduled to go on sale in Vietnam in the third quarter of this year under the name Omoda C5. In addition to the C5, Chery will also sell three other models in Vietnam this year: the Omoda E5, Jaecoo J7, and Jaecoo J7 PHEV.
The Omoda C5 will go on sale in Vietnam in the third quarter of this year, along with the E5.
Initially, Omoda and Jaecoo vehicles will be imported into Vietnam from Indonesia. Once a factory in the Thai Binh province becomes operational, vehicles from the two sub-brands of Chery will be assembled in Vietnam.
Chery has been preparing to return to the Vietnamese market since 2023, but the launch has been repeatedly delayed. This has caused some potential customers to lose patience.
Chery previously sold vehicles in Vietnam in 2009, partnering with Vietnam Motors Corporation (VMC). However, Chery failed to impress Vietnamese consumers at the time and eventually withdrew from the market. The past failure is likely one of the reasons why Chery has chosen to sell vehicles under two new sub-brands, Omoda and Jaecoo, in Vietnam.
