At the 2024 Beijing Auto Show, Mazda not only debuted its new EZ-6 electric car, but also unveiled the Arata concept car. Unlike the EZ-6, the Mazda Arata is still just a concept car. However, many speculate that the Arata could preview the design of the next-generation Mazda CX-5.
Adorned with the latest iteration of the Kodo design language, the Arata features some of Mazda’s most distinctive exterior design cues. This can be seen in the closed-off grille, which is flanked by thin LED daytime running lights, at the front. At the rear, the taillights feature an interesting L-shape design inside.

As a concept car, the Mazda Arata’s design is still quite rough around the edges and not yet suitable for a production car. The SUV features headlights that are positioned low at the corners of the front fascia, a Mazda logo that incorporates hidden LED lighting, digital cameras instead of traditional wing mirrors, aerodynamically designed alloy wheels with a two-tone black and purple finish, and a Formula 1-style high-mounted brake light. There are also narrow windows and sharp character lines on the sides.

Mazda has yet to release any photos of the interior or the technical specifications of the car. However, according to the Japan Times, Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro has revealed that the Arata will go into production next year. The production version of the Mazda Arata will reportedly come with the same EV and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain options as the EZ-6.
The Mazda Arata will be available in both EV and PHEV versions.
In the Chinese market, the Mazda EZ-6 is believed to share its powertrains with the Changan Deepal SL03. The first is a rear-mounted electric motor that produces 215 horsepower or 255 horsepower, depending on the version, and 320 Nm of torque. This electric motor is paired with either a 58.9 kWh or 66.8 kWh battery pack, providing a range of 530 km and 610 km respectively on the CLTC test cycle.
The second is an electric motor that produces 215 horsepower or 235 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque. This electric motor is paired with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine to extend the driving range. The battery pack has a capacity of 19 kWh or 28.4 kWh, providing a range of 134 km and 200 km respectively without using the gasoline engine. When combining both the gasoline engine and the battery pack, the car can travel 1,140 km with the 19 kWh battery pack and 1,200 km with the 28.4 kWh battery pack.
According to the Japan Times, the production version of the Mazda Arata will have a similar range as the EZ-6. The SUV is expected to be sold in China only initially.
