Datsun is an automotive brand with a long history, dating back to its establishment in 1914. It is the predecessor of the Japanese automotive brand Nissan.
However, in Vietnam, Datsun is not a familiar brand to the majority of consumers, unlike classic car models from Toyota, Volkswagen, or Mercedes-Benz, due to the relatively small number of vehicles that have appeared in Vietnam.
To date, the number of Datsun vehicles still in operation is even smaller.
Due to the exclusivity of the Datsun line, a car enthusiast in Hanoi has painstakingly collected and restored a Datsun from the Fairlady line, which was produced around 1969.
Thanks to the investment of effort, time, and money, this Datsun Fairlady 1969 is now able to operate quite stably. At one point, the car was even offered for sale at a price of up to 1.7 billion VND (equivalent to a new SUV).
This Hanoi-registered Datsun Fairlady 1969 belongs to the second generation of the Datsun Fairlady line with the code SP311/SPL311. Its design is considered to have a strong European influence when compared to similar models such as MG, Fiat, Triumph, and even Alfa Romeo.
The Datsun Fairlady 1969 features a convertible soft top design with 2 sporty doors and 4 seats inside (in a 2+2 configuration with a rather cramped back row). The size of the Datsun Fairlady 1969 is also quite compact, with a length of 3,955mm and a front end that extends forward, giving it a distinctly sporty look.
The soft top is made of a vinyl-coated fabric that can be opened and closed using a lever inside the car. Additionally, the reverse-opening hood is also a very European feature of the Datsun Fairlady 1969.
The car is equipped with a 1.6L naturally aspirated engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. As a result, the Datsun Fairlady 1969 can produce a maximum power of 88 horsepower and a maximum torque of 132 Nm.
However, the car’s current owner has replaced the manual transmission with a Toyota 4-speed automatic transmission. According to the owner, using a Toyota transmission will make the car more stable, durable, cost-effective, and easier to repair.
The interior of the car has retained its retro feel, with analog gauges displaying speed, engine RPM, water temperature, and oil pressure. The owner has also invested in reupholstering the car’s interior with leather.
The steering wheel has also been replaced with a classic 3-spoke wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel, further enhancing the car’s nostalgic appeal.
