The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall for 116,020 Mercedes-Benz GLE and GLS SUVs from model years 2019 to 2024. This includes high-performance AMG and ultra-luxury Maybach variants, which are at risk of overheating and potential fires due to a 48V grounding wire located beneath the front passenger seat.

Specifically, this electrical wire may not have been properly secured during assembly, and its location beneath the passenger seat means that in certain circumstances, it can reach high temperatures, increasing the risk of a fire if it is not fixed in an appropriate position.

Mercedes-Benz has stated that a loose grounding wire will not be indicated on the dashboard, and all customers are advised to bring their vehicles to dealerships for a free repair. The German automaker has not reported any fires or incidents related to this issue, but 31 reports of this fault have been filed with Mercedes-Benz headquarters from August 2022 to November 2023.
