After a two-year hiatus, Go-Kart racing has returned to Ho Chi Minh City, with a new track opening in Thu Duc City. This is considered a more accessible option for enthusiasts compared to the Dai Nam track, which is located about 40 kilometers away in Binh Duong Province.
I recently had the opportunity to experience the newly inaugurated Go-Kart track in Thu Duc City. Having previously trained and participated in several Go-Kart races at the Dai Nam track, I was able to notice the distinct differences between these two locations.
Affordable Pricing, but Room for Service Improvement
Cost is often a primary concern for those interested in Go-Karting. The newly opened track offers attractive pricing, with rates approximately one-third of what one would pay at the Dai Nam track. During weekdays before 5 PM, each eight-minute session costs VND 350,000, and purchasing a package of three or five sessions further reduces the price.
The registration process can be time-consuming. |
However, to secure a slot, customers must go through a lengthy process. First, they need to register and have their photos taken, then purchase tickets, and finally, present their tickets at the race registration counter. During peak hours, this entire procedure can take a minimum of 20 minutes per customer.
The track offers both outdoor and indoor racing options. To access the outdoor track, a valid driver’s license for cars is required. In the absence of a license, customers must opt for at least one session on the indoor track, which features electric Go-Karts with lower power output.
About ten minutes before the race, customers are briefed on regulations and instructions related to vehicle control, safety, and other pertinent information. This is presented in the form of an informative video suitable for a diverse range of customers, including children and foreigners.
Despite having ten Go-Karts available, each session accommodates a maximum of six vehicles. For larger groups, participants must split into smaller teams. In addition to the standard Go-Karts, the operator also provides two-seater and children-friendly options with reduced power.
The pit exit is positioned directly on the racing line, creating a potentially hazardous situation when vehicles exit the pit and merge onto the track. While this may not be an issue during staggered sessions, it could pose a danger during competitive races.
The track surface at certain turns is less than optimal, resulting in a noticeable loss of control while driving. On the upside, some sections are banked toward the turns, allowing drivers to maintain higher speeds through the corners.
Regarding the vehicles, the Go-Karts supplied by the Sodi brand are specifically designed for rental purposes. Consequently, they offer lower speeds and acceleration compared to the Go-Karts used at the Dai Nam track. However, these rental karts come with a built-in safety frame and adjustable pedals and seats, providing a more comfortable and secure experience for beginners.
Who Is the New Go-Kart Track For?
During weekends, the new Go-Kart track attracts a large number of customers, resulting in wait times of over 30 minutes. This is a positive sign for motorsports in general and could potentially fuel the growth of Go-Kart racing in Vietnam.
Overall, the Go-Kart track in Thu Duc City offers advantages in terms of pricing, travel convenience, and modern equipment. It adequately serves those who want to try their hand at motorsports for the first time or improve their skills in controlling a racing vehicle. Here, one can experience acceleration, cornering, and gradually learn techniques such as when to brake, when to accelerate, and how much steering is needed.
However, for more experienced Go-Karters or those who have mastered the basics, this track falls short of fulfilling the remaining aspects of the racing sport. Improvements are needed in service quality, track layout, and other areas.
For enthusiasts seeking a true Go-Karting experience, the Dai Nam track remains the go-to destination, despite its higher price tag. Hopefully, with its proximity to the center of Ho Chi Minh City, the new Go-Kart track in Thu Duc City will continue to enhance its quality, catering to both curious newcomers and seasoned Go-Karters.
By refining the track design and improving services, and perhaps organizing competitive races, this venue has the potential to become an exciting hub for speed enthusiasts, thereby contributing to the growth of Go-Kart racing in Vietnam.
