The MG4 Electric Car Launches in Vietnam, Priced at 828,000,000 VND – Can It Compete with VinFast?

With a price tag that's not exactly budget-friendly, along with the lack of a nationwide charging network like VinFast electric cars, and the preconceived notions that many Vietnamese individuals hold against Chinese automobiles, the MG4 is anticipated to face an uphill battle in the competitive market.

On June 1, 2024, the MG brand officially introduced the MG4 electric car model to the Vietnamese market. This is an electric car model that was once exhibited at the Vietnam Motor Show (VMS) 2022. In the Vietnamese market, MG4 has 2 versions, DEL and LUX, with corresponding prices of 828 million and 948 million VND, respectively.

As previously informed, MG4 is the international version of the Mulan model currently sold in China. Developed based on the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP), MG4 has a length x width x height of 4,287 x 1,836 x 1,504 mm, a wheelbase of 2,705 mm, and a minimum turning radius of 5.3 m.

MG4 belongs to the C-segment hatchback segment.

Positioned in the C-segment, MG4 has a unique exterior that combines the crossover and hatchback segments. With the design language “Energetic Agility”, this Chinese car is equipped with triangular LED headlights that sweep to the rear, integrated LED daytime running lights, front fog lights located vertically below, and a sporty front bumper with a wide central air intake.

In addition, there are U-shaped hood lines, tinted windows, 2-tone 17-inch alloy wheels, carbon fiber side skirts, and a sloping roof in the style of a coupe. At the rear, the MG4 is equipped with a split roof spoiler, Y-shaped taillights connected by a strip of lights across the trunk lid, and a rear bumper with a large diffuser.

Inside the MG4 is a 2-row, 5-seat interior with a simple design style. The rear seats can be adjusted to fold 60:40 or flat to provide cargo space from 363 – 1,177 liters depending on the user’s needs.

The standout features of the car include a 10.25-inch center touchscreen with high resolution, support for Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, a 2-spoke D-cut steering wheel with integrated controls, a shift knob, an electronic parking brake, wireless phone charging, automatic air conditioning, and rear air vents.

In addition, the MG4 is also equipped with the MG Pilot driver assistance system with technologies such as adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, lane departure warning, and intelligent high beam control. Also included are electronic stability control, traction control, and hill start assist.

The “heart” of this model is a powerful electric motor that delivers 170 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque in the DEL version. The corresponding figures for the LUX version are 201 horsepower and 250 Nm.

In the standard DEL version, the car uses a 51 kWh battery, giving it a range of 350 km on a single charge. Meanwhile, the LUX version is equipped with a 64 kWh battery, offering a range of 450 km. According to MG, MG4 users can charge the battery at home or at public charging stations. With 140 kW fast-charging technology, the charging time to 80% is only 26 minutes.

The MG4 uses a rear-wheel drive system and offers 5 driving modes, including Standard, Sport, Custom, Snow, and Eco. The One Pedal function allows the driver to control the car with just one pedal.

Furthermore, this Chinese electric car also has a V2L function, which can provide power to external devices with an output of 2.2 kW, meeting the electricity needs of outdoor activities such as camping and picnics.

Overall, the MG4 is not cheap, and the lack of a widespread charging station network like VinFast, as well as the prejudice of many Vietnamese people towards Chinese cars, will significantly affect the competitiveness of the MG4 in Vietnam.
