Mid-Size SUV Sales Table for May 2024 (units: vehicles)

Ford Everest: 811 units sold

The Ford Everest is one of the three mid-size SUVs that witnessed positive sales growth in May 2024. Specifically, this model sold 811 units, a 5.8% increase compared to the previous month. This result once again cements the “king of the segment” status for this American SUV.

Ford Everest

Ford Everest

In the past, the Ford Everest hasn’t received as aggressive discounts as some of its competitors in the same segment. However, its appeal among Vietnamese consumers remains undiminished.

The Ford Everest currently offers a total of six versions, with prices ranging from VND 1,099 billion to VND 1,545 billion. This “expensive but worth it” SUV from the US boasts a modern and muscular design, spacious 7-seat interior, and outstanding comfort and safety features.

The Ford Everest in Vietnam is available with two diesel engine options, both with a 2.0L capacity. The single-turbo engine produces a maximum output of 170 horsepower and a peak torque of 405 Nm, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The twin-turbo engine, on the other hand, generates 210 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. This more powerful engine is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and is exclusive to the high-end trims.

Hyundai Santa Fe: 496 units sold

The Hyundai Santa Fe maintained its position as the second best-selling mid-size SUV in terms of sales volume in May. However, unlike the Ford Everest, the Santa Fe experienced a setback with a 6.4% decline in sales, resulting in 496 units sold.

Hyundai Santa Fe

Hyundai Santa Fe

Starting June 18, 2024, the listed price of the Hyundai Santa Fe has been reduced by VND 50 million for the 2.5 Gasoline Standard, 2.2 Diesel Standard, 2.5 Gasoline High, and 2.2 Diesel High trims. The Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid, on the other hand, received a price cut of VND 100 million. The new listed prices for the SUV now range from VND 979 million to VND 1,269 billion. This change, along with the expected 50% reduction in registration fees for domestically produced and assembled cars taking effect from July 2024, is anticipated to boost the sales performance of the Hyundai Santa Fe.

In addition to the five trims, the Santa Fe offers three engine options. First is the Smartstream Theta III 2.5L gasoline engine, delivering a maximum output of 180 horsepower and a peak torque of 232 Nm, paired with a 6-speed Shiftronic automatic transmission. Second is the Smartstream D2.2 diesel engine, generating 202 horsepower and 440 Nm of torque, mated to an 8-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Lastly, there’s the hybrid powertrain, combining a 1.6L SmartStream turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor. The gasoline engine produces 180 horsepower and 265 Nm of torque, while the electric motor adds 44.2 kW, roughly equivalent to 60 horsepower. This setup is complemented by a 1.49 kWh battery (270 V, 5.5 Ah) and a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Toyota Fortuner: 246 units sold

Similar to the Hyundai Santa Fe, the Toyota Fortuner faced an unfavourable month in terms of sales, with a 7.8% decline to 246 units sold. The Fortuner maintained its segment ranking despite the decrease.

Toyota Fortuner

Toyota Fortuner

The Toyota Fortuner is currently offered in Vietnam with five trims and prices ranging from VND 1,055 billion to VND 1,35 billion. Additionally, the SUV has received upgrades in terms of features, including a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system and wireless connectivity with smartphones via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Similar to the Hyundai Santa Fe, the Toyota Fortuner offers three engine options: the 2.4L diesel, 2.8L diesel, and 2.7L gasoline. These engines produce 147 horsepower/400 Nm, 201 horsepower/500 Nm, and 164 horsepower/245 Nm, respectively. The engines are paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and are available with either rear-wheel drive or 4WD.

Mazda CX-8: 175 units sold

May 2024 witnessed a decline in sales for the Mazda CX-8. This mid-size SUV sold only 175 units, a decrease of 13.3% compared to the previous month, placing it fourth in the segment.

Mazda CX-8

From June 8, 2024, the distributor THACO has applied new promotional prices for the Mazda CX-8. All four versions of the SUV received a price reduction of VND 10 million. The new promotional prices for this mid-size SUV range from VND 939 million to VND 1,119 billion, making the Mazda CX-8 one of the most affordable options in its segment.

Aside from its competitive pricing, the Mazda CX-8 impresses with its eye-catching design, spacious interior, and comprehensive comfort and safety features. Unfortunately, the Mazda CX-8 only offers one engine option: the 2.5L Skyactiv-G gasoline engine, which delivers 188 horsepower and 252 Nm of torque. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and is available with either front-wheel drive or AWD, depending on the trim.

Kia Sorento: 104 units sold

Contrary to its sister model, the Hyundai Santa Fe, the Kia Sorento experienced sales growth in May. The Sorento’s sales increased by 22.9% to 104 units.

Kia Sorento

Kia Sorento

The Kia Sorento is currently offered in Vietnam with 12 trims and prices ranging from VND 964 million to VND 1,499 billion. For this price, customers will get a mid-size SUV with four engine options, the most diverse in the segment.

The first is the Smartstream 2.5 MPI gasoline engine, producing 177 horsepower and 232 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Smartstream D2.2 diesel engine, on the other hand, generates 198 horsepower and 440 Nm of torque and is mated to an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Next are the hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, both utilizing a 1.6L turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor. The gasoline engine produces 178 horsepower and 265 Nm of torque, while the electric motor in the hybrid version adds 60 horsepower and 264 Nm of torque. In the plug-in hybrid versions, the electric motor delivers 90 horsepower and 304 Nm of torque.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport: 68 units sold

The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport was the mid-size SUV with the highest growth rate in May 2024. With 68 units sold, the Pajero Sport experienced a remarkable 172% increase in sales, allowing it to escape the bottom 10 worst-selling cars in the market.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

This impressive performance can be attributed, in part, to the brand’s promotional programs and exclusive dealer discounts. In May 2024, Mitsubishi dealers offered significant discounts of up to VND 300 million on the 2023 VIN Pajero Sport 4×4 AT high-end trim, reducing its price to VND 1,075 billion. The 4×2 AT trim was also advertised by dealers at a price of less than VND 900 million.

In June 2024, Mitsubishi is offering a 100% registration fee waiver, two years of free physical damage insurance, and a supportive interest rate package for the Pajero Sport. Additionally, the SUV comes with two or three years of free maintenance, depending on the trim.

The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport in Vietnam is equipped with a 2.4L Mivec diesel engine, producing 178 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque. The SUV is available with either rear-wheel drive or 4WD, with a rear differential lock.

Isuzu MU-X: 12 units sold

Once again, the Isuzu MU-X finds itself at the bottom of the mid-size SUV segment in terms of sales, with only 12 units sold in May, a 40% decrease. Unsurprisingly, the MU-X also secured a spot in the bottom 10 worst-selling cars in the market.

Isuzu MU-X

Isuzu MU-X

The Isuzu MU-X’s weaknesses lie in its unappealing design and relatively lacklustre features. The SUV is powered by a 1.9L 4-cylinder diesel engine that produces 150 horsepower at 3,600 rpm and 350 Nm of torque at 1,800-2,600 rpm. In the high-end trim, the engine is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and 4WD. The other trims feature rear-wheel drive.

The Isuzu MU-X is priced between VND 911 million and VND 1,25 billion.
