After a dull April, the Vietnamese auto market saw a slight improvement in sales during May. In the B-segment sedan category, which is highly popular among Vietnamese customers, most models recorded positive growth, with the exception of the Toyota Vios and Honda City.

B-segment Sedan Sales for May 2024 (Units: Vehicles)

The Toyota Vios, which used to hold the top spot, slipped to second place in the segment as it recorded a 17% decrease in sales compared to the previous month. In May, the Japanese model sold 766 units, mainly due to a lack of attractive promotions compared to its competitors.

In early March, Toyota adjusted the price of the Vios, reducing it by 21-47 million VND to a range of 458-545 million VND.

The Hyundai Accent reclaimed the top position in the B-segment sedan category in May 2024, with an 8.9% sales growth, selling 924 units. Notably, despite the announcement of the new generation Accent’s launch at the end of May, a majority of customers still opted for the older version of the Korean model.

This can be attributed to the fact that during May, dealerships actively offered discounts on the previous generation Accent, with price reductions ranging from 40 to 60 million VND depending on the version and location. The highest discount was offered on the most expensive variant, bringing the actual price below the 500 million VND mark.

The previous-generation Hyundai Accent had a starting price of 426 million VND and went up to 542 million VND for the highest trim.

Mazda2 maintained its position at number three, also recording the strongest sales growth in the B-segment sedan category in May. Specifically, this model achieved a 19.2% growth rate, selling 509 units.

Mazda2’s improved sales performance can be partly attributed to price incentives offered by the distributor. In May 2024, the 1.5 AT Standard version was discounted by 22 million VND to 408 million VND, while the 1.5 Luxury variant was offered at 484 million VND, a reduction of 25 million VND.

The 1.5 Premium version of the Mazda2 did not receive any discounts in May and retained its original price of 534 million VND.

Ranking fourth was the Honda City, whose sales declined by 25.2% to 509 units in May. This was the second consecutive month of decline for the City, despite the Japanese automaker offering incentives for the model. Specifically, during May, the B-segment sedan was offered with a 50% discount on registration fees and a one-year body insurance package for all three versions, equivalent to a value of 28-30 million VND.

The Honda City is highly regarded for its performance and equipment offerings, but it also carries the highest suggested retail price in the segment, ranging from 559 to 609 million VND.

The remaining three positions remained unchanged, with Mitsubishi Attrage, Kia Soluto, and Suzuki Ciaz occupying the fifth, sixth, and seventh spots, respectively. Attrage sold 213 units, Soluto sold 25, and Ciaz sold 3. Notably, the Ciaz continued to be one of the slowest-selling models in the overall market.

The Suzuki Ciaz is only available in one version and is priced at 534.9 million VND. Despite the distributor offering a 50% discount on registration fees in May, the model failed to attract a significant number of customers.
