The Wuling Mini EV, a compact electric car, was officially launched in Vietnam on June 29, 2023, three years after its debut in its home market. Despite its tiny stature, consumers are curious about the power of this little EV.
In terms of specifications, the Mini EV is equipped with an electric motor that produces 17.4 horsepower, only slightly more powerful than a Honda SH150i scooter. Its optimal speed ranges from 60-70 km/h, equivalent to the maximum speed allowed for motorcycles on Vietnamese roads.
These specifications might not be impressive for a car, and some may even wonder if the Mini EV is allowed on Vietnam’s highways. The answer is yes, but with a caveat. There are sections of highways that require a minimum speed of 60-80 km/h, which could make it challenging for the Mini EV to keep up.
But at such a low speed, is the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV even allowed on Vietnam’s highways?
In its home market of China, consumers are also hesitant to take the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV on the highway. The concern is that maintaining the minimum speed could drain the battery quickly, as the car’s range is between 120-170 km. Moreover, the lack of fast-charging capabilities means it takes a lengthy nine hours to fully charge the vehicle, which could be a significant inconvenience for long-distance highway trips. This has led to light-hearted jokes about the Mini EV being a “motorcycle with a roof” or a “housewife’s car.”
