In 2023, rumors circulated about the discontinuation of the Toyota Yaris in Vietnam, with the compact SUV, the Yaris Cross, taking its place. This has now been confirmed as the Yaris is no longer featured on the Toyota Vietnam website.
The Toyota Yaris has been struggling with low sales in the Vietnamese market. In May 2024, no Yaris vehicles were delivered to customers, and only eight have been sold so far this year. Most of the Yaris cars sold recently were pre-ordered by customers.
In contrast, the compact SUV, the Yaris Cross, has been performing well in the market. With 902 units sold in May 2024 and a total of 2,939 units sold so far this year, Toyota Vietnam’s decision to replace the Yaris with the Yaris Cross seems justified.
With the departure of the Toyota Yaris, the compact hatchback segment now only has two options: the Suzuki Swift and the Mazda2. However, the Vietnamese market will soon welcome a new entrant, the BYD Dolphin.
The compact hatchback segment, in general, has not been very popular in Vietnam. In the first five months of 2024, only 208 Suzuki Swifts were sold, while specific sales figures for the Mazda2 Hatchback are not available.
There are several factors contributing to the lack of appeal of compact hatchbacks in Vietnam, including less impressive features, uncompetitive pricing, and limited interior space. Additionally, this segment faces strong competition from compact SUVs, which offer higher ground clearance, more features, and spacious interiors.
The Toyota Yaris is not the only car to be discontinued in Vietnam this year. Earlier, the Mazda BT-50 pickup truck was also quietly removed from the Mazda website. Suzuki has also announced the discontinuation of the Ertiga Hybrid and Ciaz models.
Prior to its discontinuation in Vietnam, the Toyota Yaris was available in a single G variant, priced at 684 million VND.
