The Leapmotor C16 is the brand’s newest SUV, a 6-seater marvel that is both affordable and family-oriented. With a length of 4,915 mm, a width of 1,905 mm, and a height of 1,770 mm, this SUV boasts a spacious interior. But what’s truly impressive is its price tag, starting at just 506 million VND and going up to 604 million VND for the fully electric version, making it a highly competitive option in the market.

Officially unveiled on June 28, 2024, the C16 comes in six different variants, offering a range of options for prospective buyers. For those seeking a more feature-rich experience, a full option package is available for an additional 10,000 RMB, which includes 21-inch wheels, Yokohama tires, a 15.6-inch rear screen, a 21-speaker sound system, and ambient lighting.

Leapmotor C16 2024: A 6-Seater SUV That Offers Unparalleled Value

Under the hood, the C16 showcases its prowess with its architecture and technology. It utilizes the Leap 3.0 architecture and incorporates a cell-to-chassis (CTC) 2.0 design. The all-electric variants take advantage of advanced 800V technology, while the higher-spec models include a 128-line lidar from Hesai, enhancing its performance and safety features.

With 50% of pre-sales going to families with two or more children and 65% to three-generation families, the C16 is clearly designed with the modern family in mind. Deliveries are set to begin next month, with an initial target of 2,000 vehicles, ramping up to 5,000 in August.

Buyers have a choice of six elegant colors for the C16: Starlight Silver, Starlight Purple, Skylight Grey, Pearl White, Metallic Black, and Glazed Emerald. The SUV bears a strong resemblance to the C10, featuring a closed-off grille and lens-style headlights, but with a more muscular overall shape.

From the side, the C16 has a sleek profile, with its MPV-like silhouette enhanced by the horizontal lines. It rides on impressive 21-inch wheels. The rear design continues the family-oriented theme, with familiar see-through taillights. The extended-range version, however, does not have a distinct design, as the exhaust pipe is hidden, similar to the pure electric version.

The interior of the C16 is just as impressive, featuring a centrally mounted 14.6-inch infotainment screen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chip, enabling advanced features such as a 360-degree surround view and voice control. It also includes facial recognition technology for added convenience and security. The interior is available in white, orange, or purple, creating a modern and vibrant atmosphere.

For rear-seat entertainment, a 15.6-inch screen is mounted on the roof, providing an enjoyable experience for passengers. The second-row seats are captain’s chairs with electric adjustment, heating, and ventilation functions, ensuring optimal comfort. Additionally, small trays that can be adjusted via voice command fold out from behind the front seats, providing a convenient space for rear passengers.

The third-row seats are designed for maximum comfort, with a claimed 947 mm of headroom and adjustable backrests that can be tilted by 10°. Passengers in the third row also benefit from a generous 120 mm-wide armrest and USB Type-C charging ports. Access to the third row is made easy through a 160 mm-wide walkway between the second-row seats. Both the front and rear windows are double-layered for improved sound insulation.

The extended-range versions of the C16 are equipped with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 68 horsepower. The electric motor, mounted on the rear axle, delivers up to 170 horsepower and 320 Nm of torque. The battery has a capacity of 28.4 kWh, offering a pure electric range of 200 km (CLTC) and a combined range of 1,095 km. Fuel consumption is impressive, with a WLTC rating of 6.19 liters/100 km and a CLTC rating of 5.4 liters/100 km.

The all-electric variant, on the other hand, boasts a larger 67.7 kWh battery and a more powerful motor, generating 215 kW of power and 360 Nm of torque. It offers a maximum range of 520 km and can charge from 30% to 80% in just 15 minutes. It’s worth noting that the C16 is only available with rear-wheel drive.

In terms of intelligent driving capabilities, the C16 is equipped with an OrinX chip and lidar. With a total of 30 sensor hardware components, the SUV is theoretically capable of achieving L3 autonomous driving. Currently, it offers features such as automatic lane change (ALC), traffic jam assist (TJA), adaptive curve cruise (ATC), navigation assisted piloting (NAC), and intelligent high-speed pilot (NAP), to name a few.

In a market where many automakers boast of being the “first” or the “best,” Leapmotor takes a surprisingly rational approach. With the introduction of the C16, they have focused on straightforward communication and competitive pricing. This strategy aligns with their brand philosophy of offering exceptional value, making the C16 an attractive choice for those seeking a feature-rich, affordable, and family-oriented SUV.
