Last April, the Prime Minister requested that the Ministry of Finance urgently study and propose to the Government a reduction in registration fees for domestically produced and assembled automobiles. This move aims to stimulate consumer demand after a prolonged period of declining sales in the market.

Below is a list of highly anticipated SUVs and MPVs expected to benefit from the upcoming registration fee incentives.

SUVs and MPVs in the 500-600 million VND price range

In the 600 million VND price range, consumers have a diverse range of options, including SUVs of various sizes and MPVs. This price segment is also highly considered during promotional periods.

Among them, the Mitsubishi Xpander and Kia Sonet are notable mentions. The Mitsubishi Xpander has been the leader in the affordable MPV segment throughout 2023 so far. With an average daily sales figure of over 50 units, it was also the best-selling car in the Vietnamese market last year.

This year, despite being affected by the business fluctuations during the Tet holiday, the Xpander’s sales performance remains impressive compared to its competitors. In the first report of the second quarter, Mitsubishi Vietnam sold 1,262 Xpander units, maintaining its position as one of the most popular models in the market.

Mitsubishi offers the Xpander at prices ranging from 560 million VND for the MT variant to a high of 698 million VND for the Cross version. With the anticipated registration fee discount, this MPV could see a reduction of approximately 50-60 million VND depending on the model.

In addition to affordable MPVs, the upcoming registration fee incentive also draws attention to the A-segment SUVs. Previously, this group of vehicles gained popularity through hatchbacks such as the Hyundai Grand i10 and Kia Morning. However, in recent years, the scale has tipped in favor of SUVs with improved ground clearance, such as the VF 5 Plus, Toyota Raize, and Kia Sonet. Excluding the VF 5 Plus due to its unique engine configuration, the Kia Sonet stands out as a highly anticipated model for the upcoming registration fee reduction.

According to statistics from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA), in the first report of the second quarter, Thaco Vietnam sold 563 units of the Kia Sonet, leading the A-segment SUV category. In the Vietnamese market, the Kia Sonet is currently priced between 519 and 574 million VND.

A diverse range of options in the 800 million VND price range

When it comes to SUVs in the 800 million VND price range, consumers often consider options such as the Ford Territory, Hyundai Tucson, or Mazda CX-5. Although the Ford Territory is the newest entrant in this segment, introduced at the end of 2022, it has maintained stable sales performance throughout the previous year.

In April of this year, the Territory’s pricing was adjusted downwards to attract customers. Specifically, the Ford Territory Trend is now priced at 799 million VND. The Titanium and Titanium X variants are now priced at 889 million VND and 929 million VND, respectively.

Its competitor, the Hyundai Tucson, is also a popular choice among consumers during the registration fee incentive period. In Vietnam, the Hyundai Tucson is offered at prices ranging from 799 to 959 million VND.

In April, the Tucson’s pricing was adjusted to stimulate consumer demand at the beginning of the year. Following the change, the Tucson is now priced between 769 and 919 million VND.

SUVs in the one billion VND range

The Hyundai Santa Fe and Ford Everest were two SUV models that experienced significant sales growth during last year’s registration fee reduction. While the Santa Fe benefited from the policy for domestically assembled vehicles, Ford proactively offered a 50% discount on the registration fee for the Everest to maintain its sales performance.

In the latest VAMA sales report, both of these midsize SUVs showed signs of slowing down as many customers awaited the new registration fee support. Ford sold 766 units of the Everest in April, a 14.7% decrease compared to the previous month. Meanwhile, TC Group sold 530 units of the Hyundai Santa Fe, bringing the total sales for the year to 1,050 units.

The Santa Fe is expected to be the more anticipated model during the upcoming registration fee reduction. However, the Everest remains competitive by offering exclusive incentives and a wide range of variants for customers to choose from.

In Vietnam, the Hyundai Santa Fe is currently priced between 1 and 1.39 billion VND. With the anticipated registration fee incentive, customers can expect a reduction of approximately 100 to 130 million VND. The Ford Everest has a starting price of 1.1 billion VND for the Ambiente variant, while the top-of-the-line Titanium+ model is priced at 1.468 billion VND.
