According to Motor1, the next generation of the Mazda CX-5 will be offered with a hybrid powertrain option in the near future. This information was not publicly announced but was mentioned in Mazda’s 2023 financial report.
The third-generation Mazda CX-5 will utilize an in-house developed hybrid system. While the Japanese automaker has not confirmed whether the hybrid system will be self-charging or plug-in, Motor1 suggests that Mazda will leverage its knowledge of hybrid technology from its collaboration with fellow Japanese automaker, Toyota.
In the same financial report, Mazda confirmed plans to introduce the CX-50 hybrid variant to additional markets in the second half of 2024. Currently, in China, the CX-50 is equipped with an electrified powertrain similar to the Toyota RAV4.

When the Mazda CX-50 was introduced in 2022, observers questioned whether the Mazda CX-5 would be discontinued. However, the relatively strong sales performance of the CX-5 in the North American market has allowed both models to coexist peacefully.
Motor1 cited sales figures indicating that the Mazda CX-5 sold 153,808 units in North America last year, almost 3.5 times more than the CX-50’s sales during the same period.
Meanwhile, the Mazda CX-5 remains the best-selling compact SUV in Vietnam. According to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA), the CX-5 sold 3,119 units in the first four months of this year, leading the compact SUV segment and ranking third in overall vehicle sales in Vietnam, behind only the Ford Ranger (4,824 units) and Mitsubishi Xpander (4,771 units).

Returning to Mazda’s financial report, Motor1 noted that the automaker mentioned the possibility of selling the Mazda EZ-6 – a model believed to be the electric variant of the Mazda6 – in the Chinese market. This sedan will also be offered with a plug-in hybrid version when it officially goes on sale in the country.
Mazda stated that an electric vehicle developed on a dedicated platform will be launched in 2027. The Japanese automaker also shared plans to introduce a range of all-electric vehicles between 2028 and 2030.
