After a rather quiet start to the year, Vietnam’s automotive market is showing signs of a relatively positive recovery. Total market sales grew by 135% in March before a slight dip of 11% last month, according to data from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA).

In parallel, several new models are set to be introduced to Vietnamese customers, making the domestic car market even more vibrant, especially with the news of an upcoming registration fee incentive for domestically assembled vehicles.

Hyundai Grand i10 Facelift

According to the latest report from TC Motor, the Hyundai Grand i10 sold only 229 units in April, a decrease of nearly 62% compared to the previous month. The company explained that the sales performance of the Hyundai Grand i10 is due to the model being in the product clearance phase before the launch of the upgraded version.

While TC Motor has not yet revealed any information related to the upgraded Hyundai Grand i10 in the Vietnamese market, the next generation of the A-segment model, which was launched in Europe in March 2023, is expected to be introduced to local customers.

Since it is just a facelift, the 2024 Hyundai Grand i10 does not have too many changes in terms of technical specifications or dimensions. The daytime running lights remain neatly tucked inside the trapezoidal grille at the front, but now feature a new honeycomb design instead of the boomerang style of the current generation.

The cabin of the Hyundai Grand i10 is supplemented with an armrest for the driver’s seat. The 4.2-inch instrument cluster behind the steering wheel remains digital but no longer has an asymmetrical design like the current versions. The car is also equipped with automatic air conditioning and an 8-inch central entertainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

According to a survey by Tri Thức – Znews, many Hyundai dealerships in Vietnam no longer have the old-generation Grand i10 in stock. Meanwhile, some dealerships with remaining inventory are offering promotions equivalent to 50% of the registration fee for the Hyundai Grand i10, which translates to a discount of around 18-23 million VND.

The current generation Hyundai Grand i10 has a total of 6 versions in the Vietnamese market, with prices ranging from 360 million to 455 million VND.

Third-generation Mitsubishi Triton

Currently, some Mitsubishi dealerships in Ho Chi Minh City are taking deposits for the next-generation Mitsubishi Triton, with expected delivery in September this year.

The third generation of the mid-size pickup truck was officially introduced to Thai customers in July last year and also made an appearance at the Mitsubishi booth during the Bangkok International Motor Show 2024 in Thailand at the end of March.

The length of the 2024 Mitsubishi Triton is 55 mm longer than the previous generation, the width is increased by 115 mm, the height is raised by 35 mm, and the wheelbase is extended by 130 mm.

The new generation Mitsubishi Triton features a more upright grille, with the Mitsubishi logo on top as an accent. The daytime running lights are designed to be thin and placed horizontally just above the main LED headlights.

The car uses a 2.4L diesel engine with the code 4N16, replacing the 4N15 engine of the previous generation, offering a total of three output options. In the highest version, the car can achieve a maximum output of 201 horsepower and a peak torque of 470 Nm.

In the Thai market, this electric car has two engine options, producing a maximum output of 170 horsepower and 435 horsepower, respectively. With the 49 kWh battery option, the MG4 can travel up to 423 km on a single charge, while the 64 kWh battery allows for a maximum range of 480-540 km.

BYD Lineup

In June, BYD is likely to officially enter the Vietnamese automotive market with three pure electric models, including the BYD Dolphin, BYD Seal, and BYD Atto 3. This strategy is consistent with BYD’s approach in Southeast Asia, where the Chinese automaker has already begun its journey to conquer customers in Thailand and Indonesia with these three models.

The BYD Dolphin is expected to be the most attractively priced model of the Chinese automotive brand in its first foray into the Vietnamese car market. Positioned in the B-segment, the BYD Dolphin competes with models such as the Toyota Yaris and Suzuki Swift.

The highest-end version of the BYD Dolphin is equipped with an electric motor that delivers a maximum output of 201 horsepower and a peak torque of 310 Nm, while the standard version uses a 94 horsepower and 180 Nm motor. With the Blade battery, the BYD Dolphin can travel up to nearly 500 km on a full charge.

Thanks to its success in the Thai and Brazilian markets, the BYD Atto 3 continues to be expected to be a key model for the Chinese automaker in the Vietnamese car market.

The BYD Atto 3 will only have a single engine option, producing 198 horsepower and 310 Nm of torque. Combined with the 49.92 kWh or 60.48 kWh battery options, this urban crossover can travel up to 410-480 km on a single charge.

Meanwhile, the BYD Seal is an electric sedan with a coupe-like design, optimizing aerodynamics. The interior of the BYD Seal is quite similar to the BYD Atto 3, but this electric sedan will have up to three engine options, delivering a maximum output of 203-530 horsepower.

The BYD Seal has a maximum range of 510-650 km, according to the manufacturer.
