According to Carscoops, a recent iSeeCars study revealed that in 2004, the collective colors of black, white, silver, and gray appeared on 60.3% of cars sold in the US. However, by 2023, this percentage had climbed to 80%, indicating a decline in the popularity of colorful cars in the American automotive market.

A more detailed breakdown shows that white remains the most popular car color in the US, accounting for approximately 27.6% of cars sold in 2023, a significant increase from the 15.6% recorded in 2004. White is also the top choice for SUVs and passenger cars. Beige is the preferred exterior color for pickup trucks, while gray is favored by sports car owners.

Black comes in second in terms of popularity in the US market, with a share of 22%, while gray accounts for 21.3% of car sales. Silver follows closely behind with a 9.1% market share. The iSeeCars report highlights a significant decline in the appeal of silver cars among American car buyers, with a 52.2% decrease compared to 2004 figures.

According to iSeeCars statistics, a new car model introduced in the US market in 2003 offered 6.7 exterior color options, slightly less than the average of 7.1 color choices in 2004. However, in recent years, the percentage of cars sold in black, white, gray, and silver has not increased significantly.

Aside from the top four colors, blue is the next most popular exterior color choice in the US, with an 8.9% share. Red follows closely behind, accounting for 7.3% of new car sales in 2023. Green comes in at 2%, while orange and beige bring up the rear with a mere 0.5% share of the US car market.

Karl Brauer, an expert from iSeeCars, comments on the apparent disappearance of colorful cars from the market. “Despite automakers offering a wider range of colors for new car models, the number of vehicles sold without black, white, gray, or silver exteriors has decreased significantly. This group has lost more than half of its market share in the past 20 years and is expected to continue declining in the next two decades,” he observes.
