Details of the 1998 Toyota Crown, the Simple “Bodyguard” of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong

The news of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s passing has saddened the people of Vietnam. From the time he held the highest position in Vietnam until his passing, the car that General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong often used was a 1998 Toyota Crown with the license plate 80B-2089, which caught the interest of many. This car is quite special as it was previously used by Mr. Nong Duc Manh, the former Chairman of the National Assembly (until 2000), before he became the General Secretary.

When Mr. Nong Duc Manh became the General Secretary, he handed over the car to the National Assembly Office, and the new agency provided him with a car arranged by the Central Committee’s Office. Surprisingly, his successor, Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong, continued to use the same car even though it was already eight years old at that time.

The 1998 Toyota Crown with the license plate 80B-2089 has always accompanied General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on his journeys, and it will be the most special and memorable Toyota Crown to the people due to its simplicity, just like its owner, who has used it for decades.

According to our findings, the 1998 Toyota Crown with the license plate 80B-2089 that often accompanied General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is a Super Saloon sedan. This car belongs to the 10th generation of the Toyota Crown, produced from 1995 to 2001, and is also the version most sought after by car enthusiasts in the country.

In this generation, the Toyota Crown has a refreshed look with a more boxy shape than its predecessor. It is only manufactured as a sedan and hardtop (frameless window). This is the first Toyota Crown that does not use a body-on-frame construction, instead featuring a unibody structure introduced with the Majesta 140-series. The car retained the old S130 chassis until 1999.

At the front, the Toyota Crown’s grille consists of seven horizontal chrome bars with a bright chrome outer frame. The headlights are white, with yellow turn signals, and the front bumper has two horizontal bars and fog lights on either side.

On the sides, the Toyota Crown exudes elegance with its square design, accentuated by the bright silver dual multi-spoke rims, which have since been adopted by many luxury car brands. At the rear, the three-tier taillights feature different colors: red for brake lights, white for reverse lights, and orange for turn signals. The rear bumper protrudes, while the license plate area is recessed between the taillights, creating a unique character for this generation of the Toyota Crown.

The Toyota Crown S150 with a gasoline engine was only offered with an inline-six engine with a displacement of 2.0, 2.5, or 3.0 liters. Similar to previous generations, all cars equipped with a 2.0L engine were provided as slightly shorter and narrower vehicles to comply with Japanese government size regulations.

The Toyota Crown used by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is powered by a 3.0-liter engine that produces a maximum output of 220 horsepower and a peak torque of 295 Nm. All-wheel drive was offered on the Royal Extra and Royal Saloon trims. The S150 Crown was the last generation to be offered with a manual transmission.
