According to Reuters, officials from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism conducted an investigation at Toyota’s headquarters earlier this week after irregularities were found in the certification applications for several of their vehicle models.
This investigation was triggered by a sector-wide audit of car manufacturers’ certification processes, initiated by the Ministry following the safety testing scandal at Toyota’s subsidiary, Daihatsu.
As a result of the audit, several car manufacturers, including Toyota, Mazda, Honda, Suzuki, and Yamaha, admitted to submitting erroneous or altered data during the vehicle certification process.
Reuters reports that Toyota was the first manufacturer to be investigated, while Kyodo News reveals that Yamaha is the next company to be inspected by the Ministry’s officials.

Kyodo News also reports that the Ministry is considering whether to revoke the certifications granted to the affected vehicle models, pending an assessment of their compliance with safety and environmental standards.
In response to the findings, Toyota has suspended sales of three vehicle models in Japan: the Toyota Corolla Fielder, the Toyota Axio, and the Toyota Yaris Cross. Mazda has taken similar action, halting sales of the Mazda2 hatchback, the Alexa/Mazda3, and the older generation Mazda6.
Both Mazda and Toyota have assured the public that no performance violations were found, and customers can continue using the affected vehicles. Toyota Vietnam has clarified that the Yaris Cross mentioned above is a different model from the one currently sold in Vietnam.
Yamaha, on the other hand, admitted to conducting noise tests for their motorcycles under inappropriate conditions and submitting false reports during a separate inspection. As a consequence, they have halted sales of their YZF-R1 motorcycle in Japan.

According to reports, Suzuki was found to have manipulated brake test results for the Alto hatchback variant. However, this model is not sold in Vietnam but is marketed in India as the Suzuki Maruti.
Honda has also confirmed irregularities in noise and power testing for over 20 vehicle models, including the Jazz, CR-Z, Legend, Accord, Insight, Odyssey, and NSX, over an eight-year period up until October 2017. The company asserts that these models are no longer in production and are unrelated to their current lineup.
