According to Japanese media, the new-generation Toyota Corolla will reportedly feature a PHEV version with BYD-supplied hybrid technology, offering an impressive range of up to 2,100 km.
Best Car, a Japanese automotive news source, revealed that the Toyota Corolla‘s next generation is expected to launch in 2026 and will likely utilize hybrid technology from Chinese automaker BYD. This innovation could enable the vehicle to achieve a combined range of up to 2,100 km.
The new 1.5L gasoline engine is rumored to deliver a thermal efficiency of at least 46.06%, marking a 5% improvement over Toyota’s current Dynamic Force engine, which peaks at 41% thermal efficiency.

This new gasoline engine series will be available in naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms. While exact specifications remain under wraps, Best Car predicts that the new engine will generate approximately 128 hp/147 Nm in its naturally aspirated guise, 98 hp/127 Nm in the hybrid variant, and around 176 hp/225 Nm in the turbocharged version.
According to Japanese media, the new 1.5L gasoline engine may be paired with BYD’s plug-in hybrid technology, offering a range of up to 2,100 km for the upcoming PHEV models, as achieved by BYD’s Qin L DM-i and Seal 06 DM-i.
Currently, the plug-in hybrid version of the fifth-generation Prius is equipped with a 13.6 kWh battery, enabling an all-electric range of up to 105 km.
