BMW Sales Show Modest Growth as Rivals Such as Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche Struggle

According to Reuters, BMW reported a 2.3% increase in sales for the first half of 2024, selling nearly 1.1 million vehicles. This includes a significant 34% surge in pure electric car sales, totaling almost 180,000 units. With these impressive figures, BMW retains its position as the best-selling luxury car brand globally.

Meanwhile, its key competitors have experienced a decline in sales.

Mercedes-Benz sold 960,000 vehicles during the same period, an 8% decrease compared to 2023. Their pure electric car sales also took a hit, dropping by 17% to just 93,400 unitsโ€”only half of BMWโ€™s electric car sales.

Mercedes-Benz attributed this slowdown to a focus on โ€œhealthy growth in markets with high-profit marginsโ€ while acknowledging the development of electric vehicles had slowed in key markets.

Porscheโ€™s struggles continued, with a 7% decline in sales for the first six months of the year, totaling 155,945 vehicles. Their global sales were heavily impacted by a significant drop in demand from the Chinese market, as well as a halving of sales for their electric model, the Taycan.

Audi also faced challenges, with an 8% sales decrease to 833,000 cars, and a meager 1.3% increase in electric car sales. The brand is now considering closing its Brussels factory due to disappointing sales of the Audi Q8 e-tron.

BMWโ€™s success has been driven by strong performances from several models, including the large sedan 7-Series, which saw a 22% sales increase, along with the X1 and 3-Series. The BMW M performance division also contributed significantly, selling 99,517 vehicles.

Jochen Goller, a member of the BMW AG Management Board responsible for Customers, Brands, Sales, commented: โ€œIn the first six months of 2024, we saw double-digit growth in our pure electric vehicles and upper luxury class models.โ€ Goller further attributed this success to the appeal of their products, despite โ€œchallenging market conditions.โ€
