Global sales of electric vehicles (including battery-powered BEVs and plug-in hybrid PHEVs) have risen by 13% year-on-year, according to statistics, driven by strong growth in China.
Currently, China accounts for over 60% of global vehicle sales, thanks to an increased supply of electric cars and robust sales by BYD, the country’s largest electric car manufacturer, which has contributed to a rise in the domestic market share of PHEVs in the first half of 2024.
Charles Lester, Data Director at Rho Motion, stated that global PHEV sales reached 1.4 million units by the end of June, with 0.86 million of those sold in China, representing a 25% increase year-on-year.
In the European market, sales declined by 7% to 0.30 million units, with Finland, Ireland, and the Netherlands experiencing the most significant drops, while Italy saw a 34% increase following government incentives.
In the US and Canada, PHEV sales rose by 6% to 0.14 million units in the same month. Notably, in Brazil, BYD’s sales for June tripled compared to the same month in 2023.
Mr. Lester mentioned that Rho Motion has lowered its electric vehicle sales forecast for 2024 by 5%, expecting 16.6 million electric vehicles to be sold this year, with significant variations across regions.
In reality, demand for electric cars has cooled in recent months after years of strong growth, as consumers await more affordable options to replace hybrid vehicles.
