In a strategic move, Japanese automaker Mitsubishi has recently joined forces with the Honda-Nissan alliance to expand its market reach and enhance its competitiveness.

As part of this initiative, Mitsubishi entered into a confidential agreement with Honda and Nissan and commenced detailed discussions regarding their collaboration.

The trio intends to standardize vehicle control software, with Nissan and Honda jointly developing the basic software and exploring its utilization in Mitsubishi vehicles.

Additionally, the three companies will consider mutual vehicle line-up supplementation. Honda does not produce plug-in hybrid (PHV) or pickup trucks in Japan, whereas Mitsubishi excels in this domain and will discuss Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM) provisions. Future collaborations between the two companies may also extend to the mini-vehicle sector.

Honda and Nissan, currently the second and third-largest automakers in Japan, boasted global sales of 4.1 million and 3.44 million vehicles, respectively, in the fiscal year ending March 2024. In contrast, Mitsubishi Motors sold 810,000 units during the same period. Combined, the alliance’s total sales would amount to 8.35 million vehicles.

The formation of the Honda-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance will effectively divide Japanese automakers into two powerful camps. Toyota, the world’s leading automaker, has already forged alliances with Daihatsu, Suzuki, Subaru, Mazda, and Hino Motors, resulting in a collective sales volume of 16 million vehicles.

Amid economic challenges, automakers view alliances as a strategic solution to optimize production costs, expand markets, and collaborate to enhance competitiveness. Moreover, Japanese automakers aim to unite to challenge prominent players in the electric vehicle market, such as Tesla and BYD.
