In a surprising move, Nissan has adjusted the pricing of its Kicks e-Power model in the Philippines.

All three versions of the Nissan Kicks e-Power, including the EL, VE, and VL editions, now feature a price reduction of 60,000 PHP (approximately 26 million VND). As a result, the starting price of this vehicle in the Philippines has dropped to a range between 1.179 million and 1.479 million PHP (512.6 – 643.1 million VND).

According to Autoindustriya, the reason behind Nissan’s unexpected price adjustment for the Kicks e-Power is the recent recognition of the model as a battery electric vehicle (BEV) by the Department of Energy in the Philippines.

The Electric Vehicle Industry Development Act (EVIDA) in the Philippines defines BEVs as vehicles with wheels that utilize batteries as their power source for propulsion. Notably, this legislation does not stipulate that electric vehicles can only be charged via cables, implying that power can be derived from alternative sources, such as a gasoline engine.

In contrast, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are described as those that employ a rechargeable energy storage system and derive their power from fuel. In these vehicles, the wheels are propelled by both a gasoline engine and an electric motor.

Nissan’s legal team successfully argued that the Kicks e-Power falls under the BEV category, despite it possessing both gasoline and electric motors like HEVs. However, the key distinction is that the electric motor solely drives the Nissan Kicks’ movement.

This news has sparked discontent among some users, who have taken to social media to voice their opposition to this classification. They argue that the Kicks e-Power is not a true electric vehicle and that this recognition sets a problematic precedent for other hybrid vehicles to be mislabeled as electric. This could lead to confusion regarding vehicles that emit pollutants but are mistakenly perceived as electric.
