While the electric vehicle market is buzzing, a host of new gasoline-powered models are also set to be introduced to Vietnamese customers in the coming months.

Toyota Vios

Back in October 2023, Daihatsu – a subsidiary of Toyota – filed for industrial design protection in Vietnam for the new Toyota Vios. However, the company is yet to disclose the official launch date for this “national” model. The new-generation Toyota Vios, also known as the Yaris Ativ, has already gone on sale in several Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand, Laos, and Malaysia.

Built on the all-new DNGA (Daihatsu New Global Architecture) platform, the new Vios boasts a wheelbase that is 70mm longer than its predecessor, resulting in a more spacious and comfortable interior. Specifically, the car measures 4,425 mm in length, 1,740 mm in width, and has a wheelbase of 2,620 mm.

The Toyota Vios has undergone a complete redesign compared to its predecessor. The front end stands out with its angular LED headlights and large trapezoidal grille. The B-segment sedan adopts a fastback profile, giving it a sportier appearance. At the rear, a decorative strip runs across the trunk lid, connecting the smaller and more angular taillights, resulting in a robust and modern look.

The interior of the new Vios features a minimalist and modern design, highlighted by a floating 8-9 inch infotainment screen compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additionally, it offers a range of premium features above its class, including electronic parking brakes, LED ambient lighting with 64 color options, a smart Start/Stop system, push-button start, and smart keyless entry.

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado

Toyota filed for exclusive design protection for the 2024 Land Cruiser Prado in the Vietnamese market back in April this year. According to sales consultants, the model is expected to be officially distributed from July 2024. Local dealerships have started taking deposits for the Land Cruiser Prado 2024, with a tentative price of 3 billion VND.

The new Land Cruiser Prado to be sold in Vietnam is likely to be named the Land Cruiser LC250, distinguishing it from the LC300 currently on the market.

According to the Industrial Property Bulletin, the exterior parts registered for protection include the front and rear lighting assemblies, front and rear bumpers, and grille. Meanwhile, the interior components covered by the exclusive protection application are the steering wheel and dashboard designs.

Based on the images of the registered components, the Land Cruiser Prado registered in Vietnam appears to have the same design as the new model introduced in Japan, suggesting that the model to be sold in Vietnam may be imported from Japan.

The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado features a design that is almost completely different from its predecessor. The SUV is based on the TNGA-F platform, shared with several other SUVs and pickups within the group, such as the Toyota Sequoia, Tundra, and Land Cruiser J300, as well as the Lexus GX and LX.

It has dimensions of 4,920 mm in length, 2,139 mm in width, 1,859 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,850 mm. Compared to the previous generation, it is 60 mm longer, 254 mm wider, 31 mm lower, and has a wheelbase that is 60 mm longer.

The exterior of the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado blends traditional and modern elements. It features a boxy shape similar to the new Lexus GX 2024. The square headlights and grille are inspired by the Land Cruiser J60 from the 1980s. At the rear, the new vertical taillights also pay homage to the J60, and the tailgate now opens upward instead of sideways. The rear bumper is designed to be higher and features a black matte finish, emphasizing its off-road capabilities.

Inside, the Land Cruiser Prado gains rear-seat heating, a head-up display, an HDMI port, a larger sunroof, and a premium 14-speaker sound system in place of the previous 14-speaker JBL setup.

The upcoming Land Cruiser Prado in Vietnam is expected to be powered by a 2.4L turbocharged engine producing 326 horsepower and 630 Nm of torque, paired with a small electric motor. The transmission is an 8-speed automatic, and the SUV features a two-wheel drive system with a center differential and rear differential. The new model also benefits from Toyota Safety Sense, incorporating a range of advanced driver-assistance systems.

Honda HR-V

According to the June 2024 issue of the Industrial Property Bulletin published by the National Office of Intellectual Property, Honda Vietnam has filed for industrial design protection for several new automotive components, including the front bumper, grille, and a portion of the taillights. These appear to be elements of the HR-V Hybrid recently launched in Japan in April.

In its home market, the Honda HR-V is known as the Vezel. This B-segment crossover receives design tweaks, enhanced technology, and improved safety features.

The HR-V facelift sports a narrower and more rectangular grille, while the new front bumper is more athletic and features distinctive accents depending on the trim level. The redesigned taillights incorporate horizontal LED strips, and the rear bumper has been simplified.

Inside, the HR-V has been subtly updated for improved usability. The central control cluster has been redesigned, and the wireless charging pad has been repositioned for easier access by the front passenger. The new Honda Remote Operation feature enables remote control of the air conditioning, trunk opening, and vehicle location tracking. The model retains the 7-inch digital instrument cluster and 9-inch infotainment screen from the previous generation.

The Honda HR-V 2024 benefits from an upgraded Honda Sensing suite of advanced driver-assistance systems, now including Traffic Jam Assist, adaptive headlights, and a system to mitigate the effects of unintended acceleration.

In terms of powertrain, the standard HR-V continues to use a naturally aspirated 1.5L four-cylinder gasoline engine producing 118 horsepower and 142 Nm of torque. This is paired with a continuously variable automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. Meanwhile, the HR-V Hybrid combines a 1.5L Atkinson Cycle engine with an electric motor, resulting in a total output of 131 horsepower and 253 Nm of torque.

With the registration of industrial design protection, it is likely that the new Honda HR-V will be introduced to the Vietnamese market soon.
