BYD has recently officially opened its electric vehicle factory in Thailand, marking its first foray into the Southeast Asian market.

The company will be producing models such as the Dolphin, Atto 3, Seal, and Sealion 6 at this facility, with an annual capacity of up to 150,000 vehicles.

Spanning an area of 948,000 square meters, BYD’s new Thai factory is valued at $490 million and comprises four large parts and vehicle manufacturing plants. The factory is expected to create over 10,000 jobs once it reaches full capacity.

BYD focuses on four production stages at this facility: forming, welding, painting, and assembly. Liu Xueliang, BYD’s General Manager for the Asia-Pacific region, stated, “The company will assemble batteries and other critical components on-site.”

According to research firm Counterpoint, Thailand is BYD’s largest overseas market, accounting for 46% of the country’s electric vehicle market share in the first quarter of this year. BYD is also the third-largest passenger car brand in Thailand.

The opening of this factory in Thailand is a significant step in BYD’s global expansion strategy and demonstrates its commitment to the Southeast Asian market and the government’s policies to promote electric vehicle production.

Currently, BYD has a total of 115 showrooms in Thailand, and in the coming months, the company plans to expand its sales network to 77 provinces across the country.

BYD is not alone in its interest in Thailand; many other Chinese automakers view the country as a lucrative market for electric vehicle development.

According to the Thai Automotive Association, eight out of the top ten best-selling car brands in Thailand are from China.
