Mercedes-Benz and Starbucks: A Charged Partnership
In a recent development, Mercedes-Benz has joined forces with Starbucks to install quick-charging stations for electric vehicles at select stores across the coffee chain.
The German luxury carmaker plans to set up DC fast chargers with a capacity of up to 400 kW at over 100 Starbucks locations along a 2,250-kilometer route connecting Washington and California.
This ambitious project is estimated to cost Mercedes-Benz a whopping $1 billion.
Currently, the German automaker’s quick-charging network is already present in several states, including Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Over the next 12-18 months, Mercedes-Benz aims to expand this network to nearly half of the total number of states in the US.
According to Carscoops, MN8 Energy, a subsidiary of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, will provide financial support by contributing half of the costs for the deployment of Mercedes-Benz’s DC charging infrastructure.
On the other hand, Starbucks will not contribute financially but will provide space in their parking lots for Mercedes-Benz to install the chargers.
This is not the first time Starbucks has partnered with an automotive manufacturer to install charging stations. Previously, they collaborated with Volvo to set up a total of 50 chargers at 15 different stores along a 2,170-kilometer route between Denver and Seattle.
