On August 1st, the first batch of VinFast VF 3 electric vehicles was officially delivered to customers. Unlike the prototype that was revealed in May, the commercial version of this small electric car features notable improvements. We had the opportunity to test-drive and review the VF 3 in Hanoi.
The VinFast VF 3 has a suggested retail price of 240 million VND (without battery) and 322 million VND (with battery).
Well-finished Exterior
Despite the short time frame of just 3 months from the opening of orders to delivery, the exterior of the VinFast VF 3 is impressively well-finished. The assembly details are precise and tight, with no visible gaps. This reflects the Vietnamese automaker’s ability to optimize its production processes.
The VF 3’s headlights still use halogen bulbs.
The car features 16-inch steel wheels, similar to the prototype, but now painted black and with hubcaps, giving it a more stylish and robust appearance.
The windshield washer fluid reservoir is located outside, next to the windshield, as the car’s hood cannot be opened like in conventional cars.
The VF 3’s side mirrors have a rectangular design and are manually adjustable using round knobs, allowing for flexible adjustments without the risk of breakage during minor collisions. While most users prefer larger mirrors for better visibility, the current design strikes a balance between aesthetics and functionality.
The VinFast VF 3 has dimensions of 3,190 mm in length, 1,679 mm in width, and 1,652 mm in height. Despite being positioned in the mini SUV segment, the car has a substantial presence and is even taller than some A-segment cars. Compared to its direct competitor, the Wuling MiniEV, the VF 3 is significantly larger and taller.
The charging port of the VinFast VF 3 is located on the right side of the car. It supports fast charging, taking only 36 minutes to charge from 10% to 70%. When using a standard home charger, it takes approximately 11 hours to charge from 10% to 70%.
The VF 3’s trunk space is limited due to its small size. Additionally, the second row of seats cannot be folded flat, which is a disappointment for some users.
Interior with Some Drawbacks but Acceptable for the Price
Stepping inside, the interior of the VinFast VF 3 has undergone significant changes compared to the prototype. The cabin features a predominantly gray and black color scheme, with beige accents around the air vents to create a youthful and vibrant atmosphere.
The VinFast VF 3 has a 2-door design but still offers 4-seat configuration.
The steering wheel could be considered a drawback as it is not leather-wrapped and lacks control buttons. However, this is understandable given the VF 3’s affordable price range of 200-300 million VND.
Behind the steering wheel is a gear shift lever similar to those found in luxury cars.
The dashboard, next to the air vent on the right, will display the priority number plate for the first 6,868 customers.
A notable feature is the 10-inch infotainment screen, which provides a crisp and smooth display, compensating for the absence of a traditional instrument cluster behind the steering wheel.
Below the central air vent are familiar climate control knobs for Vietnamese users. The door lock button, window controls, volume knob, and hazard light button are conveniently placed together.
The VinFast VF 3 is equipped with a smart key, which needs to be placed in the slot between the front seats to start the car.
The seats of the VF 3 are upholstered in fabric but offer a range of attractive color options. The cushions are relatively thick, and the high roofline and low-set seats provide ample headroom, eliminating any sense of claustrophobia.
While the second row offers ample headroom, the legroom could be more comfortable for adults. The rear seats are suitable for Asian women of smaller stature, children, or for carrying cargo.
Pleasant Driving Experience and Sturdy Chassis
The VinFast VF 3’s electric motor delivers a maximum output of 30 kW (approximately 40 horsepower) and a peak torque of 110 Nm. These numbers are not overwhelming, but thanks to the rear-wheel drive system, the small electric car doesn’t feel underpowered and performs adequately for its size.
The VinFast VF 3 can accelerate from 0 to 50 km/h in 5.3 seconds.
The accelerator pedal feels natural and responsive, without any noticeable lag or jerkiness when pressed firmly. The car’s speed builds up gradually. The steering is light and easy to maneuver, suitable for urban environments and the general public. The VF 3 performs well at speeds between 50 and 80 km/h. However, when braking abruptly from 90 km/h, the car exhibits a slight wobble.
The VF 3’s best feature is its excellent visibility, thanks to the slim A-pillars and the placement of the side mirror bases on the body, instilling confidence when navigating through city streets. With a wheelbase of just 2,075 mm, the car is highly maneuverable in tight spaces.
The suspension is on the firmer side but effectively absorbs vibrations and doesn’t transmit them to the occupants, thanks to the sturdy chassis and well-padded seats.
A Strong Contender for the Title of Affordable “National” City Car
Despite the rushed development timeline, the VinFast VF 3 delivers a satisfying overall package. It offers a decent level of convenience and safety features, justifying its price point, and provides a surprisingly pleasant driving experience.
With a full charge, the VinFast VF 3 can travel up to 215 km, which is more than sufficient for urban commutes and even weekend getaways. VinFast is the only automaker in Vietnam to develop an exclusive public charging network with a near-nationwide reach.
The combination of product attributes and favorable policies positions the VinFast VF 3 as a compelling choice for those seeking a short-distance city car, a vehicle for housewives or office workers. The company plans to deliver a minimum of 20,000 units to customers who have made advance bookings this year.
