Even before the Ford Ranger sketches were created, the design team spent time talking to Ranger owners and potential customers globally to understand how they use their vehicles and what they wanted from the next iteration.
While the pickup truck bed is a great tool for transporting goods, getting in and out of it or loading and unloading cargo can be a hassle for many owners. After in-depth discussions with customers, the Ford design team realized that customers needed an easier way to access the bed.
“We’ve seen people step on the tires to reach into the bed or struggle to jump over the sides,” said Max Tran, Chief Designer at Ford. “That’s why we developed the rear step bumper for the Ranger.”
This step is located just behind the rear wheel arch and is present on both sides of the Ranger. It is attached directly to the bed by two sturdy steel supports.
The step surface has a high-traction finish, maintaining a similarity with the language and material surfaces of the interior, thus creating a connection between the interior and exterior design of the vehicle.
Max Tran added, “The rear step is a significant improvement for the Ranger, making it easier and safer to access the bed. Above all, our talented design team integrated this feature seamlessly into the overall design.”
Ford’s customer-centric strategy is evident in the Ranger’s rear step bumper, where the intersection of engineering and innovation enhances the quality of life for its customers.
