VinFast to Offer Separate Chargers for VF 3 Electric Vehicles in August

In August, VinFast is expected to sell separate chargers for its VF 3 electric vehicles, enabling customers to charge their cars at home. For now, the vehicles can still be charged at fast-charging stations nationwide.

It is understood that most of the electricity used in the batteries of electric vehicles and electronic devices is direct current (DC), while the electricity in households is alternating current (AC).

Therefore, to charge an electric vehicle at home, a device is needed to convert alternating current to direct current. This device is called an OBC (Onboard Charger). However, the VF 3 does not have this feature, meaning it cannot convert AC to DC.

Even though the VF 3’s charging port is a CCS2 – DC port, capable of AC/DC charging, the component that converts AC (alternating current) to DC (direct current) is external to the vehicle. Users can only charge their vehicles with DC electricity at VinFast’s public charging stations or those of third parties.

It appears that VinFast is looking to enhance monitoring and control of home charging for the VF 3 to minimize risks associated with internal components. Recently, VinFast announced the upcoming launch of a home charging kit with AC-to-DC conversion functionality in August.

This AC home charger will provide users with a more convenient and safe charging option.

However, a drawback is that the electricity often has a low power output, ranging from 2.2 kW to 22 kW. To charge with high-power AC electricity, from 11 – 22 kW, the home electrical system would need to be upgraded to a three-phase system.

For those who wish to charge with high-power DC, up to 350 – 360 kW, public charging stations are available.
