The Latest Ferraris Won’t Have This Feature

The latest Ferrari models are doing away with built-in satellite navigation, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto taking its place.

Satellite navigation is a basic feature in both mainstream and premium cars. Built into the hardware, this function serves as a personal map for daily commutes.

Ferrari is one of the first brands to announce that future models, including the Purosangue SUV and the 12Cilindri supercar, will not offer this feature. The brand representative stated that Apple Carplay and Android Auto are easier to use and offer continuously updated maps.

In an interview with the Australian media, Emanuele Carando, Ferrari’s Director of Product and Marketing, said, “We made this change because we believe that phones, especially screen mirroring, offer the most user-friendly option and the best-updated system.”

The satellite navigation feature was once priced at up to USD 6,650 on the Ferrari 458 Italia. Now, screen mirroring is a free feature in Ferraris since the Covid-19 pandemic. The last time this feature was a paid option was on the Portofino, which has been replaced by the Portofino M since 2021, and currently, the Roma Spider.

Back in 2014, the Ferrari FF was the brand’s first model to be equipped with Apple Carplay. However, Android Auto only became available on other Ferrari models in 2019.

With the advancement of Apple Carplay and Android Auto, the limitations of built-in satellite navigation became apparent. One of the most notable drawbacks is the system’s outdated data and the challenge of keeping it updated. Additionally, inputting and searching for accurate addresses across different markets can be difficult for drivers.

Emanuele Carando added, “Most of Ferrari’s designs are not meant for daily use, and we don’t want our owners to have to learn a different mapping system each time they get behind the wheel.”

While Ferrari relies on third-party software, other car manufacturers prefer to use internal software to better control customer data. Automotive giant General Motors has removed Apple Carplay and Android Auto from its latest electric models, claiming that its self-written software is more optimized, especially for finding charging stations in the US. Meanwhile, Tesla and Rivian initially excluded these connections to focus users on their self-developed software.
