Authorities in Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City, have recently launched an investigation and arrested the driver involved in a serious multi-vehicle collision on Phu My Bridge on August 8.

On the afternoon of August 8, the driver, identified as 36-year-old Trinh Tien Dung, a native of Kien Giang, was transporting seafood in a 14.4-ton truck from Kien Giang to Khanh Hoa.

At around 2:30 p.m., as the truck ascended Phu My Bridge to access Nguyen Thi Dinh Street and the Ho Chi Minh City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway, it experienced a sudden brake failure while descending the bridge and crashed into seven other vehicles traveling in the same direction.

The accident not only caused extensive damage to multiple vehicles but also resulted in three cars being completely burned down, with several individuals trapped inside. Fortunately, they were rescued from the harrowing incident.

Preliminary investigations by the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport revealed that the truck, with license plate number 68H-000.68, had violated weight regulations, exceeding the permitted cargo weight by over 50%.

Regarding the technical condition of Phu My Bridge, the Department of Transport assured that the bridge is structurally sound and operates according to approved designs. Additionally, the road signage and markings in the area comply with current standards and regulations.

The Department of Transport attributed the cause of the accident to the driver’s negligence and the vehicle’s unsafe technical condition, emphasizing that the bridge’s infrastructure was not a contributing factor.
