The GWM Tank 500 has been upgraded to withstand gunfire and small explosives while maintaining the exterior of the large SUV.
Russian engineering company, ArmorGroup, has developed an armored version of the GWM Tank 500 SUV. The “armor” protects the body, engine, and windows of the vehicle from gunfire and small explosives while preserving its original design.
In a video posted by ArmorGroup, steel plates can be seen installed beneath the vehicle’s body panels, providing enhanced protection for the cabin and engine compartment. The company also notes that the armor is designed with minimal welds and overlapping joints for increased protection.
Additionally, this Tank 500 is fitted with steel plates to protect the rear glass, sunroof, underbody, and engine compartment. According to ArmorGroup, the GWM Tank 500’s armor complies with BR4 GOST protection standards, capable of stopping three direct shots of 7.62mm ammunition from a distance of 10 meters (traveling at a speed of 720 m/s).
The vehicle is also equipped with an engine compartment fire extinguisher, bulletproof glass, and run-flat tires. The brakes and suspension have been upgraded to accommodate the increased weight of the armor.
The rest of the GWM Tank 500 remains unchanged, including its driver-assistance and safety features.
In terms of powertrain, the armored GWM Tank 500 is powered by a 3.0L twin-turbocharged V6 engine, producing a maximum output of 355 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque. According to Drive, the GWM Tank 500 has a curb weight of 2.6 tons, and with the additional steel armor, the total weight of the vehicle is expected to increase significantly.
ArmorGroup has not disclosed the price of the armored GWM Tank 500. Drive estimates that the price could start at AUD 268,700 (approximately USD 179,223 or VND 4.49 billion), which is significantly higher than the price of the GWM Tank 500 Ultra currently sold in Australia.
