The Vietnamese government’s upcoming reduction in registration fees for domestically assembled cars is expected to take effect in August. This policy, which offers a 50% subsidy on registration fees, aims to boost car sales and revive the sluggish Vietnamese auto market.

Even before this policy was announced, several Japanese automakers in Vietnam had already begun offering similar incentives on both locally assembled and imported vehicles.

Honda Lineup

Throughout July, Vietnamese customers can take advantage of promotions in the form of registration fee discounts when purchasing Honda City, Honda CR-V, or Honda BR-V models.

The Honda City L and G versions, for instance, come with a 100% registration fee waiver, amounting to a discount of VND 56-59 million. The Honda City RS version offers a 50% discount on the registration fee, approximately VND 30.5 million. Additionally, customers who opt for the highest-end version of the Honda City will receive a one-year free physical damage insurance policy and other gifts from the dealership.

After the discount, the Honda City G version is priced at VND 503 million, while the L version costs VND 530 million. As for the RS version, the price after the discount is approximately VND 579 million.

For the Honda CR-V, the July promotions include a 50% registration fee discount for the L version and a 100% waiver for the G version. This translates to approximately VND 58 million in discounts for the L version, along with a one-year physical damage insurance policy, while the G version of this C-segment SUV enjoys an equivalent of VND 111 million in discounts.

Also, during this month, customers who choose to purchase the Honda BR-V will receive a 50% registration fee support, along with other gifts from the dealership. With a listed price of VND 661 million for the G version and VND 705 million for the L version, the promotion for this small MPV ranges from VND 33 million to VND 35 million.

It is quite rare for the Honda BR-V to be included in the monthly promotions offered by Honda to Vietnamese customers. The models that frequently receive registration fee support from the Japanese automaker include the Honda City, Honda CR-V, Honda Civic, and Honda HR-V.

Additionally, the Honda Accord, a D-segment sedan imported from Thailand, has been a consistent presence in Honda Vietnam’s promotion programs since the beginning of the year. Entering July, the incentive for this model remains unchanged at VND 220 million, bringing the car’s price down to VND 1.099 billion.

As of the end of May, Honda had sold 9,100 vehicles in the Vietnamese market, with the Honda City being the best-selling model, recording sales of 2,873 units. Surprisingly, the Honda HR-V, a B-segment SUV, surpassed the Honda CR-V to become the second best-selling model for the brand. In the first five months, the Honda HR-V achieved sales of 2,197 units, while the Honda CR-V reached 2,023 units.

Mitsubishi Passenger Vehicles

Mitsubishi, a fellow Japanese automaker, is also offering promotions in the form of registration fee support for its passenger vehicle lineup, including both locally assembled and imported models.

In July, the Mitsubishi Xforce is offered with a 50% registration fee discount, equivalent to VND 30 million for the GLX version. For the Exceed version, the promotion includes a one-year physical damage insurance package worth VND 9 million, along with a remote engine starter.

Customers who opt for the Premium version of the Mitsubishi Xforce will receive a one-year physical damage insurance policy worth VND 10 million. Additionally, all versions of the Mitsubishi Xforce come with a complimentary Xforce model car when purchased during this month.

As for the Mitsubishi Xpander, the promotion offers a 50% discount on the registration fee for the MT, AT Premium, and Xpander Cross variants. This translates to discounts ranging from VND 28 million to VND 35 million, along with either a 360-degree camera system or a rearview camera, depending on the version.

The Mitsubishi Attrage, a B-segment sedan, is offered with registration fee support ranging from 50% to 100%, depending on the version and year of manufacture. The incentives for this model range from VND 23.5 million to a maximum of VND 49 million, along with physical damage insurance for one year, a rearview camera, or a shark fin antenna, depending on the version.

For the Mitsubishi Triton pickup truck, the 4×2 AT Athlete version comes with a 50% registration fee discount, equivalent to VND 23.5 million, along with a one-year physical damage insurance policy. Meanwhile, the 4×2 AT MIVEC version is offered with a 100% registration fee waiver, amounting to VND 39 million, along with a one-year physical damage insurance policy and a rearview camera.

On the other hand, the “sibling” model, the Suzuki Ertiga Hybrid, is offered with a 100% registration fee waiver, fuel vouchers, and preferential loan packages. The total value of incentives for the Suzuki Ertiga Hybrid in July amounts to VND 89 million, bringing the price of this model down to VND 519 million for the automatic transmission version, while the manual transmission version is priced at VND 449 million.

At the moment, there are numerous rumors circulating regarding the potential discontinuation of the Suzuki Ertiga Hybrid in the Vietnamese market. Its possible replacement is speculated to be a hybrid variant of the Suzuki XL7, which is expected to be launched soon, possibly in July or August.

Similarly, the Suzuki Swift is facing an uncertain future after the automaker confirmed plans to shut down its car production plant in Thailand by the end of 2025. In the Vietnamese market, the Suzuki Swift, along with the Suzuki Ciaz, used to be imported from Thailand. Currently, the Suzuki Swift is offered with a 50% registration fee support, equivalent to a discount of VND 30 million. The Suzuki Swift is available in a single GLX version in Vietnam, priced at VND 560 million, competing directly with the Toyota Yaris in the B-segment hatchback category. However, the Toyota Yaris has also recently disappeared from the website of Toyota Vietnam.

After the discount, the Suzuki Swift is priced at VND 530 million. From the beginning of the year until now, the Suzuki Swift has sold 208 units, averaging just over 41 units per month.

In the same period, the Suzuki XL7 achieved sales of 1,752 units, while the Suzuki Ertiga Hybrid recorded sales of 1,122 units. Prior to being removed from the product catalog of Suzuki passenger vehicles in Vietnam, the Suzuki Ciaz, despite consistent promotions in the form of registration fee support, only managed to sell 8 units in the first five months.

Subaru Forester

In July, Subaru continues its promotional program for the Forester C-segment SUV in the Vietnamese market. The total value of incentives offered by Subaru for the Forester ranges from VND 50 million to VND 140 million.

Specifically, the i-S EyeSight version of the Subaru Forester comes with a 100% registration fee waiver and various other gifts. The total value of incentives for the Subaru Forester 2.0 i-S EyeSight amounts to VND 140 million, bringing the price of the car down from VND 1.199 billion to VND 1.059 billion.

Meanwhile, the i-L EyeSight and i-L versions offer incentives of VND 110 million and VND 50 million, respectively. After the discount, the Subaru Forester i-L EyeSight is priced at VND 989 million, while the i-L version costs VND 919 million.

Currently, the Subaru Forester is still imported into Vietnam from Subaru’s Thai plant. However, starting in 2025, Southeast Asian markets, including Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Cambodia, will begin importing the Forester directly from Japan.
