The American Love Affair With Low-Riding Cars

Despite predictions of a decline, sales of sedans such as the Honda Civic, Nissan Versa, and Toyota Corolla have surged in the first half of the year in the US market.

While the automotive world, including both consumers and manufacturers, has been captivated by the trend of tall, boxy, and ruggedly designed vehicles, with some car brands even phasing out sedans to focus solely on SUVs, the sales figures from the first half of the year in the US tell a different story. Contrary to popular belief, sedans are not only surviving but thriving, holding their own against the onslaught of high-riders.

According to the US auto market sales report for the first six months, small sedans are witnessing significant growth. As of the end of June, the Nissan Versa had sold 17,812 units, boasting the highest growth rate in the country at 61% year-over-year. Nissan’s second entrant in this segment, the Sentra, posted impressive sales of 89,028 units during the same period, reflecting a 55% increase compared to 2023. If this momentum is maintained, Sentra sales could reach 180,000 units by the end of December, potentially landing it a spot in the top 20 best-selling vehicles in the US.

Motor1 predicts that the Honda Civic will also make its way into the top 10 best-selling vehicles in the US this year. With sales of 128,788 units in the first half, the Civic has seen a notable 38% year-over-year increase.

Toyota’s Corolla, another stalwart in the sedan segment, has sold 121,991 units in the first six months, outpacing its taller counterpart, the Corolla Cross, by a significant margin. These sales figures underscore the resilience and enduring appeal of small sedans, which have often been labeled as outdated in today’s market. While there’s no denying the popularity of SUVs, low-slung vehicles continue to carve out their own niche, attracting a dedicated customer base that appreciates their dynamic driving characteristics and classic design aesthetics.
