The McLaren F1 is undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary supercars of the 21st century. When it debuted, it quickly garnered numerous accolades, including the most expensive, powerful, and uniquely designed car with a three-seat interior, a central driving position, and two passenger seats.
Upon its release, the car was priced at $845,000, and all 106 McLaren F1s ever produced found owners. However, none were as unique as the one featured in this article, as its life was mostly spent confined within the four walls of a garage, rarely seeing the light of day except during maintenance or auctions.
This particular million-dollar McLaren F1, with the chassis number 029, appears to have never been driven on the road. Its most frequent appearances are likely at exhibitions or auctions, explaining why its odometer reads a mere 410 km when it went up for auction earlier this year.
This is not the first time this car has been auctioned. In 2021, a 1995 McLaren F1 sold for a record-breaking $20.465 million at an auction held by Gooding & Company, surpassing all previous F1 sales.
While the life of this McLaren F1 may seem sad, spending its days untouched in a garage, its owners have every reason to rejoice. The value of the car has increased severalfold, akin to winning the lottery. The first owner was a Japanese collector, after which the car made its way to the US, but its fate remained much the same. This McLaren F1 sports a Creighton Brown exterior with a Light Tan and dark brown interior, accented by gold-plated details.
The McLaren F1 supercar was conceived in 1988 when the McLaren executives were at an airport, returning to the UK after watching a Formula 1 race in Italy. Four years later, in collaboration with designer Gordon Murray, they unveiled the unique three-seat supercar, limiting its production to 106 units sold between 1992 and 1998.
The reason why McLaren F1 supercars command such high prices, even as used cars, lies in their distinctive three-seat interior with a central driving position. Additionally, the gold-plated engine bay and the fact that the McLaren F1 held the title of the world’s fastest car for 11 consecutive years, from 1998 to April 2009, contribute to its allure. It achieved a top speed of 386 km/h (240 mph) during a test run on March 31, 1998. The McLaren F1 is powered by a 6.1-liter V12 engine producing 618 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque, coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission.
It wasn’t until 2020, 22 years after the last McLaren F1 rolled off the production line, that McLaren introduced another three-seat car, the Speedtail.
