Ora, a subsidiary of Great Wall Motors, has recently announced the discontinuation of its two mini electric car models, the Black Cat and the White Cat.

However, in reality, the business operations of these two models seem to have been suspended since 2022.

Interestingly, despite monthly sales of around 20,000 units, the Ora brand was losing approximately 10,000 CNY (34.9 million VND) on each car sold. The company was losing over 200 million CNY (approximately 698.5 billion VND) every month.

The main reason for these losses was the high production cost of the two electric car models, which accounted for 90% of the selling price, with the battery pack alone contributing up to 60%.

The intense market pressure, coupled with the lack of government subsidies, made it challenging for the company to continue producing the Black Cat and White Cat.

The Ora Black Cat, unveiled by the Chinese automaker in 2019, is powered by an electric motor that produces either 48 or 61 horsepower. It offers various battery capacity options, enabling a maximum range of up to 405 kilometers on a single charge.

On the other hand, the Ora White Cat, launched a year later in 2020, features a 48-horsepower electric motor with front-wheel drive, delivering a maximum range of up to 360 kilometers on a full charge.
