The Hyundai i30 CW is a C-segment hatchback that made its debut in Vietnam during the 2009-2010 period. Along with the Hyundai Sonata, Santa Fe, and Tucson, the i30 CW was one of the pioneering models that established the presence of the South Korean automotive brand, Hyundai, in the Vietnamese market.
At the time, the C-segment was quite crowded with competitors such as the Mazda 3, Toyota Corolla Altis, Hyundai i30, Ford Focus, Kia Forte, and Honda Civic. However, the Hyundai i30 CW stood out with its unique design, offering a larger overall length compared to the standard i30, which resulted in increased cargo space in the trunk.
Additionally, the CW version came equipped with a roof rack, making it ideal for long-distance travel. While the exterior of the i30 CW may show its age after 14 years on Vietnamese roads, it still retains a classic and mature look when compared to its contemporary, the 2010 Mazda 3.
One of the biggest advantages of the i30 CW is its spacious cargo area, offering a capacity of up to 1,450 liters thanks to its 200 mm longer wheelbase compared to the standard model. This feature is rarely found in modern vehicles, making the i30 CW highly convenient for grocery shopping or long-distance family trips.
Back in 2010, the Hyundai i30 CW boasted a range of high-end features, including automatic air conditioning, a sunroof, a 6-speaker CD player, an iPod connection port, CDMA telephone functionality, and smart key access. The interior was adorned with premium leather upholstery, and the rear seats could be folded in a 60/40 configuration to further expand the luggage space.
While the original driver’s seat has shown significant wear and tear over the years, the infotainment system has been upgraded by the owner with an Android screen, providing a more modern experience.
The Hyundai i30 CW was offered with two engine options globally—a 1.6-liter and a 2.0-liter—but the Vietnamese market only received the 1.6-liter inline-four gasoline engine paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission. Compared to the 1.5-liter engines commonly found in modern vehicles, the i30 CW’s 1.6-liter engine provides adequate power. However, the 4-speed gearbox results in less smooth and refined acceleration when compared to newer models.
This is understandable, given that 14 years ago, most vehicles in Vietnam were equipped with older technology. Safety-wise, the i30 CW falls short, offering only basic features such as ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution), and two airbags.
Despite its age and limitations, the Hyundai i30 CW remains a practical and affordable choice in the used car market. Prices for the 2010 model currently range from 270 to 295 million VND, while a 2009 model can be had for as low as 250 million VND, making it a great value proposition for those seeking a practical and reliable vehicle.
