The Great Automotive Exodus: Three More Brands Abandon Vietnam’s Auto Expo in 2024, Including a Market Newcomer.

The automotive industry in Vietnam is experiencing a significant shift as prominent brands such as Volvo, Ford, and BYD announce their withdrawal from the 2024 Vietnam Auto Expo. This development comes hot on the heels of Volkswagen's earlier decision to opt out of the exhibition. As these renowned automakers remove themselves from the event, it sparks curiosity about the underlying reasons and the potential impact on the local automotive landscape.

The Vietnam Motor Show (VMS) 2024 is set to officially take place in October this year. Initially, 13 automotive brands were announced to participate in the exhibition, including Ford, GAC, Honda, Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Skoda, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota, Volkswagen, MG, BYD, and Volvo. However, as of now, only 9 automotive brands remain on the official exhibition website, namely GAC, Isuzu, Mitsubishi, Skoda, Subaru, Suzuki, Toyota, MG, and Honda.

This means that 4 brands have withdrawn from the exhibition: Volkswagen, Ford, BYD, and Volvo. In July 2024, Volkswagen confirmed their withdrawal from VMS 2024, citing the inability to bring electric vehicles, predicted to be the ID.6 X, to Vietnam in time. Meanwhile, Ford, BYD, and Volvo quietly pulled out of the exhibition without any official statement from the brands or the exhibition organizers.

In addition to the 9 automotive brands, the VMS 2024 will also feature the participation of two-wheeler brands, including SYM, Yamaha, Honda, and UM Motocycles. UM Motocycles is an American-Colombian brand specializing in motorcycles and large-displacement motorcycles.

Notably, this year’s VMS is missing several prominent brands such as Hyundai, Audi, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Mini, and VinFast. Brands distributed by THACO, such as Mazda, Kia, and Peugeot, are also absent from the exhibition.

In 2023, the VMS was postponed due to a stagnant domestic automotive market caused by macroeconomic impacts and weak buying power. Additionally, the high cost of participating in the exhibition was not deemed to bring proportional benefits, discouraging automotive brands from joining.

The VMS 2024 will be held from October 23-27 in Ho Chi Minh City, with the theme “Technology and Environment.”
