Swiss Police Hand Out a Hefty Fine for a Traffic Violation

In March 2023, a 58-year-old man driving a BMW 540d xDrive was caught speeding at 120 km/h, exceeding the speed limit, and tailgating with a distance of 18-28 meters. The driver was pulled over and issued a substantial fine.

Unlike other places, traffic violation fines in Switzerland are calculated based on an individual’s income.

The BMW driver, earning an annual income of approximately 2 million USD, was slapped with a fine totaling 128,400 USD.

Questioning the legality of the fine, the BMW driver appealed to the court, arguing that the police inaccurately estimated the distance between his car and the vehicle in front through video evidence.

However, the court dismissed this claim and upheld the fine, setting it at 1,970 CHF per day for 50 days. The total amount he has to pay is 116,000 USD, along with a two-year probationary period.

Additionally, the BMW driver must pay an extra fine of 11,800 USD and legal fees of 3,500 USD.
